Park Distance Control/Real drivers

You guys really are a chatty lot: excellent! So many other forums seem a bit lifeless by comparison.

Anyways,...

Has anyone here fitted PDC to the front of their Z4? I have it at the back (which is just as well: the coupés rear visibility has not been helped by the dark glass I had fitted) but not at the front. I find the front extremities of the car very difficult to judge and it'd be kinda nice to squeeze into parking bays with a little more confidence.

Talking of confidence... I am far from being a natural-born driver. In fact, until last year I had a phobia about it. :? Slowly worked through it, moving up from Minis to, finally, my Z4 3.0si Coupé. Out of idle curiosity, am I alone here in not being a full-on driving nut, someone who just bought the car because they thought it was a great machine? Probably not, but thought it worth asking.

Havent fitted PDC to the front - in fact dont have it at all... Know what you mean about the front though - very long :)

Personally I love driving and good for you working your way up to the Z4, hope you are getting some enjoyment out of it :)

Hi Chris,

I am sure you are not alone, albeit am sure you are in the minority, in terms of not being a driving "nut" LOL. I agree about the judging of the extremities of the Zed, I find the rear far easier to judge and would love PDC on the front too.

For someone with a phobia of driving, you've done pretty well to work your way up to a 3.0si Coupe! :D

The front end is really difficult to judge, my bumper has been scraped and even cracked :o The main thing I do (if your pulling in normally) when pulling in is find the curb and see how close the other car is up to it and whether their bumper is extended over it, then I kinda just judge based off where they are parked. It really helps if they have a shiny car because then you can see your reflection. It takes a while getting used to the length....especially for me cause I drove a small truck that nontheless fit over every curb out there. On a side note, the back end is small enough that if your not close to the curb your probably still in the parking spot.

Of course an easier solution is just to back in 8)

Of course at the moment, all my friends are saying "Wow! Can I drive it?" To which the answer is "no, but I'll take you for a ride when I go to the shops." Which I do, shoving them out into the rain/hail/fog/darkness to judge how far the car's snout is from potential danger! :-)

Thanks! Yes, I am. I admit at first I was a bit wary (blood pressure up a few notches). Not sure what I expected to happen" perhaps visions of the thing going mental and dragging me screaming to the horizon at a high warp factor. :) But, much to my surprise, after a couple of days I find it's actually easier to drive than my 120i ! OK, parking is a tad tricky and the phrase "over-the-shoulder visibility" can only be uttered in ironic tones, but aside from that.

Hmm, I now realise that I am already mentally compiling a list of things I do and don't like about the car. Maybe another thread is in order?

I hear your problem, I'm nervous as hell parking my Zed so I try where possible to reverse into a space as I have rear park sensors

A front retrofit park sensor kit is available here:

I wonder whats involved in fitting it.... anyone tried it?

And I guess for satnav/tv equipped cars, a camera too!

And just to make you feel better, I don't drive fast either I bought the Zed cos I just liked it :D

...and I think that's as good a reason as any. Today I found myself making needless trips, just to I could go throw the car (fairly gently) around the winding lanes of Surrey! Quite a step forward from someone who, this time last year, was quaking at the thought of doing 2mph along the driveway! :-)

Thanks for the links. Will investigate further.
