Panic or ignore Roof warning A698

Hello there, I am paranoid about a roof problem and I think one has started. I have used roof often but not obsessively since buying my car 7 months ago, never when moving or in gusts. Used twice yesterday. Driving today with roof up on slightly uneven road, (but nowhere as bad as some Devon tarmac,) got Bong, red roof warning in dash and red light on roof lowering switch. Then it went after two seconds. Error code A698.

Advice please.
See if it returns?
Attend to sensor/connection?
Sell car :cry:

I appreciate there is a lot of info already on forum, but could someone kindly point me in the right direction.

Raise the clamshell Blue and stop it before the rest of the roof closes, there’s a micro switch on the R/S of the frame that the top of the roof sits in to make the switch, give it half a dozen presses and releases and maybe spray a touch of WD in there as it can start to stick. I’ll get a photo of it at some point if you’re struggling to find it.

It’s an easy and free starting point, it happened to one of my E89’s and cured the same issue you have.
 
It’s going to return- the thing I’ve learnt with the e89 roof is that some of the parts will need to be replaced and treated in the same way other parts on the car will need to be.

That code has flashed up as a sensor, most likely a hall sensor or micro switch has said something isn’t as it should be, probably triggered by the bump in the road

I’d be planning to change the microswitches and hall sensor usual suspects as a matter of course

In the meantime, would you use roof or just not chance it?

I am also getting A698 along with A69E and A694. I have looked at replacing the boot microswitches, but I don't seem to be able to get enough of the trim out of the way to get clear access.

I would be grateful for some photos of the switch you refer to. Also if anyone has further info about boot switch access please. I have seen the YouTube video, but it doesn't go into that area in detail.
 
You really don't need to remove a lot of trim to replace the boot closed microswitch's. Here is video I made. I show one side, the other is the same procedure. Very easy. https://youtu.be/qcwZC1uah_o
 
Well no alarm today so risked opening roof to view hall sensors and micro-switch locations from realoem image.
I managed to see one!

Do I need to remove trim to view others?
I have yet to find clear photos of locations but will continue searching this forum.

That switch hardly ever fails.
Don't use WD40 or grease in the roof!

I have found some images of Hall sensors etc. on e89 zpost :wink:

Don't worry, I only use WD40 on seized fixings. I do like electrical contact cleaner for connections when necessary.

I have just ordered some gummi bear stuff for the rubber seals.

No repeat alarms, but will order various parts from BMW this weekend.

Mine hadn’t failed but was sticking Robbi, half a dozen flicks and some lube no more issues.
