Pancake day, also know as Shrove (English version of the aribic word Shrive) tuesday and Mardi Gras (fat tuesday) is the last day of a religeous time called "Shrovetide". Shrovetide is the three days that preceed Ash Wedensday...which is the first day of Lent...which is a 40 day period of fasting. Fasting these days is just like being on a very strict diet. So traditionally from last Sunday until today people were supposed to "shrove" which means confess all their wrong doings and then on shrove tuesday (pancake day ) everyone was supposed to eat and drink as much as they could because they where gonna go hungry for the next 40 days.......the reason we eat pancakes today is that flour, eggs, fat and milk (the ingredients of pancakes) where the four main foods banned while fasting (dieting) for Lent. So their you go...eat loads today..its what your supposed to do!!!![]()
