So later after I left the Desert Run folks to their supper to go meet my friends. I found them at a parade. My friends fiance was in the parade. I'm told it was a festival of lights parade or some such. Well anyways, me being the Louisiana "good ol boy" I am. I'm envisioning lots of drinking, yelling, screaming, cheering, getting a concussion from that 5lb piece of candy that just nailed you in the head, kids tackling you at the knees to get that candy that dropped just behind you, fighting over $1 beads so that you can in turn give them to girls so that you can see their breasts or get a kiss from, Maw-maws doing backflips in the air catching candy before it hits the ground, etc....
ANYWAYS, such was not the case here. I saw people drinking beer, but not drunk-nor rowdy-nor excited. I heard some scattered cheering. All in all, that was about all I heard and saw (well the floats did look nice and had the required loud music playing). If anything the crowds as a majority seemed bored (who could blame them) as if they were just going through the motions. At any rate, I felt bad for the kids, I mean aren't parades designed to teach kids to grab what they want securely and without hesitation lest someone else snatch it from them and it is forever lost? {I think i'm going to quote that} I also felt bad for the people. Hell the walkways were even neat and orderly. For any parade in God's Country (Louisiana for those that don't believe) to move along or against the parade route you are either in the route path itself or you are approx 30 yards from the crowd. Sigh, i'm rambling...
My question is this, are all parades in Palm springs this boring? What about California? If so, I strongly recommend heading to God's Country and trying a real parade on for size. Though you may want to start small and work your way up to Mardi Gras.
