Paintwork Crazy Cracking fix?

So when I bought my Zed one of the reasons it was competitively priced was the paintwork was shocking, especially the rear quarter panels. The garage said that it was probably a poor respray that hadn't been given enough time to cure before the lacquer had been applied and it had reacted badly. It looks like the panels are scratched to bits but there is no damage they can be felt with fingernail. I don't have any close up pictures but will add some as so as I can. I have these, and if you zoom I you can start to see the problem. As you will see, and to the horror of many on here, cleaning is not my No1 priority, it is my daily driver, so she isn't very clean to begin with! I will remedy that when I get a weekend off work.

Is this something that I can correct by detailing or am I looking at a respray to fix?

Have you got any close ups? I can see the moon in greater detail than your rear wings

I could go out and take some, but its quite dark and the moon isn't very bright!

Where in the U.K. are you?

Lynchy in the SE does smart repairs for a living - in terms of a second opinion, suggest if you’re regional letting him take a look & provide some guidance.

I was never that fussed about detailing... until I started here... & last year invested in a Gringots orbital polisher. F’in expensive but can’t recommend one enough - for a muppet novice cleaner, you have to drop the pads in the dirt to screw up, fixes blemishes & makes a shiney finish a doddle (if you take your time)

:o Looks like my patio. I will leave to the detailing specialist, as there is noubt I could suggest to sort that.

I work just outside Rochester so just south of the Dartford Crossing. I don't know Lynchy so don't know if I'm close!

Lynchy’s down the A2 in Bexley I think, I’m West Malling but not home till 5th Jan so near enough - drop him a PM, (Lynchy) & I’ll also drop him a text.

Read the reviews on your new orbital toy, I chose mine as a number of models can cause more damage in inexperienced hands.

Good luck

Thanks for that mate. That one is a Dual Action so even I shouldn't be able to do too much damage! It's very similar to the one on "cleanmycar" that gets good reviews so I'm hoping I'll be ok.

Unfortunately JonLeeper I'm fairly certain Polishing/compounding the paintwork will not remedy the cracking/crazing in your clear coat. Look at the door handles in your photos. They are a different shade/colour and unaffected. The bootlid looks ok also. You will end up with a very shiny car but the lines will still be visible within the clear coat. Page 19/20 in this PDF explains https://www.sherwin-automotive.com/pdf/Troubleshooting_Guide_English_PDF.pdf
The only way to cure it is to sand it all back and respray the car. :(

I fear you may well be right, but I'm hoping that it's not cracking but" sandscratches"as per pages 45-47 and so might be curable! If not it's a full colour change to a really nice deep purple at a cost of about £3,500 when I win the lottery!

Have something similar on mine very fine scratches that pass the fingernail test but are only in certain places on the offside the filler cover and on the nearside just behind the door handle a few under the wing mirror and along the top of the front wing but nowhere else and are only visible in bright sunlight.

I have had the car 11 year and they started appearing 2 years ago the ones on the front wing appeared in the summer of this year I though I had caused it but not sure as I would think if it was my washing regime they would be all over the car.

Maybe its F in the PDF that Patrior66 posted as she sits in the same spot on my drive for days/weeks at a time and all the areas affected get a lot of sun.

The fella that looks after my roof went over the car with a PTG and said there had been a light blow over on the passenger side but nothing serious either from the previous owner or a BMW smart repair before the car reached the showroom.

Well I've met up with Lynchy, thanks for that mate, and his professional opinion is that my car was filthy and I'm a complete animal! Other than that his exact words were " well the amount of dirt on the paintwork is doing you a favour"! Other than that it needs respraying and cannot be fixed any other way. So all I need to decide how is what to do!

It was great to meet another member, thanks again Eddie, even if the news wasn't what I was hoping for.

Ok Jon, least you’ve had a 2nd opinion from a man who knows.

I have another m8 who owns his own body shop - known him since I was 4, so well over 50 years - this is his new race car.

Personally, I wouldn’t suggest spending £5k plus is worth it - I can ask him if u like for options on ‘mates rates’... you can have a chat & maybe he’ll suggest just refreshing certain panels... he’s good at age colour matching ... pics of my old Aero’s he sprayed... plus the gloss black of my old TT rear diffuser

They look great. If you don't mind asking for a rough cost to respray the car, that would be great. Eddie was saying that the entire nearside needed doing and at least the offside rear quarter. In reality that means that over half of the car needs doing so it's probably easier to just go over the entire car and not worry about the exact colour match.

Jon, sent you Bernie’s mobile nos after chatting with him.

He’s in the middle of moving to new premises, so look where Hartley is & he’ll guide you from there.
