Painting Alu Dash

Has anybody ever painted their aluminium dash parts - or know the best way to do this?

Stumbled across this wood advertised US piece on eBay, but its clearly been coloured with something and I quite like it. Have a spare aluminium set which I might experiment on.

Any ideas?

I wrapped my aluminium trims last summer. I sanded them down, used etching primer, then filler primer and filled any dents with some body filler. A bit overkill to be going under a wrap, but at least I knew that when it was done I couldn't see any imperfections.

That one you used as an example looks more like a dark brushed metal effect. Anyway, there are lots of wrapping options you could look at, or as has been suggested, hydrodipping, which could give you a dark fineline wood look. Let us know how you get on?

I used a local Bodyshop who would take standard Aluminium dash parts and spray them high gloss black and lacquer them.

Looked just like piano black and no problems

That looks a great job. I dont have any high-quality 3M, but I do have some dark wood effect wrap I might have a test with.

I had a customers Tesla wood textured interior trims wrapped in the thicker DINOC 3M vinyl and i can vouch that it didnt allow for any grains in the wood trim to show through and looked quite good.

I also have the aluminium interior trims. I got them wrapped recently with 3M wrap. The guy who did it told me that the structure of the panels were no problem. They are now gloss black, I paid 150 euro's including the door handles and the steering wheel trim.

All out. You need to get the wrap right behind the plates and apply enough heat to make it mould tight to the parts. It's not that difficult to remove everything, just takes a little patience as not the quickest job.

If times were different I'd be offering this as a discount full service to forum members (not that you're allowed to do so) remove/wrap/refit. Perhaps later in the year if the situation improves somewhat?
