it makes me really sad for a supposed 'community' the amount of 'nit picking' that goes on here, This thread and the wheel brace one being prime examples.

And that was one of Marlons threads as well......I see a trend developing.

In your opinion. You cannot compare slapping a thick gooey paint on with a brush compared to a spray which adheres to all the surfaces which are inaccesible with a brush, why dont Car painters paint the whole body with a brush & some hammerite?

Brakes done @ factory like 8 pots etc, theyre powdercoated with a wet spray coat first , not painted with a brush.

Ive also painted brakes with spray cans for over 10 years (not sure what relevance that has...)

I think it's a shame this thread has gone belly-up particularly since Marlon should be applauded for having a good go at maintenance and mods, but fact is spraying calipers in situ with standard body paint is not the end of the world but is a bit of a bodge. I'd challenge you to find any trade, expert or other authoritative advice suggesting it's the way to do it. At best it looks superficially OK and you get away with it, at worst you end up with paint around the sliders and pads and the paint goes awol and Marlons car deserves better than that. Anybody researching how to do the job deserves to find proper advice on the forum as well as practical opinion and members politely pointing out something is technically not be the best way forward shouldn't be shouted down or belittled, otherwise it's pointless looking here for reliable advice.

This is exactly it though, its painting calipers, not stripping the engine down and building it from scratch. Theyre seen through the wheels at best, not stood and examined with a magnifying glass every time you park the car. I thought in my other post it was summed up by 'nit picking' at its finest. I appreciate others have given legitimate advice, but i still stand by the fact caliper paint is cumbersome to use and yes, stripping the caliper down first may have been a good idea, but car body paint, which is designed to adhere to a metallic / plastic/ whatever surface is good enough for calipers and will go on easily & give a uniform finish, oh and Lloyd BMW, Bowker BMW and Haliwell Jones have all sold me second hand cars with the brakes painted using spray, that is a fact (as i noticed you put you challenge me to find any trade, as well as expert )

Well i suppose i feel a bit guilty for being the firestarter on that whole wheel wrench debate. I never expected it to snowball like it did! Healthy opinionated discussion is one thing, especially if it benefits people in whatever way but when it becomes a mudslinging freeforall flaming session (ben g) then that's where it becomes farcical imo.
Fortunately the animosity from benG towards myself (i hope) has been diffused, but at one point i did think 'christ, are hackles really being raised so easily...over this??'.

Cool here Jamie, I love a good shortcut myself (see my de-fogging headlamps with toothpaste post) obviously using Colgate and the wife's facial cleansing pads isn't a pro' method either :lol:

Oh and in terms of actual paint coverage regarding Marlon's calipers, he's actually done a decent job! I just have a weird dislike for the whole lot sprayed.

I'm fairly certain there was a thread on here a while back where a trader had a Z4M for sale and had sprayed the whole caliper/pad/anything and everything and everyone was hounding him for it.

Anyway, who really cares? They certainly look better than rusty coloured oem ones :lol:
