paint woes - advice please

Hello all

quick query please

my paint seems to chip at the slightest touch of anything. My last few BMs haven't seemed to have such "soft" paint. Its a sapphire black 2011 23i msport. Do others find this is so also or is a case of needing a good polish wax and seal?

Also what do people use for chip repairs. Im no expert but happy to touch up polish fine sand etc by hand. I was going to buy a pot of touch up paint from dealership ... any other suggestions / advice appreciated

thanks

Had problems with my 09 E89 as well, Sap Black of course shows issues more but I had an E85 black as well and never had a problem with the paint. Argued with BMW when it was under warranty but they refused to do anything. I believe (and I may be wrong) that they switched to a new aqueous based paint and it started in 08/09 so maybe they hadn't got it quite right then.

Waxing won't stop stone chipping. Only full clear appliqué can and they look awful imho.

Just paint up any chips using a cocktail stick for fine application. It's what I do. If you're super fussy, you can then wet sand it back and polish it up. Check out the threads on detailing world for this.

I may be wrong, but I believe it was some sort of EU ruling that meant car manufacturers had to switch from oil to water based paint.

Water based paints are very hard but quite brittle, BMW paints seems to be more prone than the Mercedes I now drive, my DSB E89 was horrendously chipped after 2.5 years and 58,000 miles the front looking like a very large pepper pot and there was just too much to keep on top of.

In the 4 years of my E89 I had my front bumper done 4 times and the bonnet once
Were you happy with the paint re colour matching?

Nicks was pure white so shouldn't be too hard to match. I've avoided any thought of paint work because of the metallic flake, I'm not convinced it would be perfect so I'd rather have stone chips rather than odd looking paint that could worry a future purchaser.

I may be wrong but I thought black is a softer paint and more prone to scratches and chips - as regards touch up paint - my car is sterling grey and I bought the exact match from Amazon for about £9 - in liquid form with a small brush - ideal for touching in small chips and a lot better than spray paint that you have to mix up - no reason to believe all the other colours are not as good a match.

How many chips have you got? One or two or too many to count?
maybe 3-4 but not given car wash yet so may reveal a few more ... :o

thanks for advice seems like paint and cocktail stick is the way to go :)

thanks all for input

planning on getting front bumper resprayed as quite a few chips/marks on it and would like a clean slate to rechip ;)

surprised at how soft paint seems to be

need to give it some TLC when weather improves

had sapphire black on my last bmw e91 and it didnt seem to chip as quick

plus im an average height and find it a little awkward getting out of parking spots which are tight so maybe i need some good old fashion rubber edges on the doors

Got a quote to respray bonnet but then i noticed two more chips just from travelling round town at 30 mph max so i thought whats the point?
