That is the question!

My mate got hit in s car back, and was told that the door could only be saved by painting... either at his own cost, or through his insurance... not ideal...

In steps me.... well I couldn't make it any worse.....

so the actual damage:

A bit of wet sanding with Mirka Abralon Sanding Discs and my DA machine...

polished up and all done...

Small dent can still be seen above... :x

And a quick reflection shot, as I couldn't leave the rest of the car...

Cheers guys....

I normally use the 3000 and 4000 discs...

leave them in a big tub of shampoo solution, and work them with the DA polisher going from 1 - 3 and back down again...

witch polish and pads did you use to remove the sanding marks?

Oh, I meant to type 2000 and 4000... silly fingers! :headbang:

The polishes were my 3M ones, so extra and ultra fine, on 3M pads and their rotary too...

The rest of the car was done with Concours Perfeco... I wasn't "allowed" to do a full polish...

Great job

Your mate should be taking it back to whoever told him it could only be painted and explaining that they need to feckin' try harder :D

Cueball can I send you some pictures of some paint problems I have. Just to see what you think I could achieve??

how could I turn down the monkey man.... ;)

no probs.... :)

Cueball do you have a paint depth gauge? I suppose your buddy thought he would of had to paint so a strike throat wouldn't have been the end of the world.
Really want to damp sand the z4 but need paint depth gauge first.
Have read up so much about the process but it still terrifies me.

Top job, Kudos.

yeah I have the paint detective one, I wouldn't touch any car without it to be honest....

I also have a local friendly professional that has the fancy one that reads plastics, so if I ever need that, he takes some readings for me...

a good detailer can wet sand a car and take less clear coat off it than polishing can...

just go slowly, measure after each pass.... and if using different grades... use one grade up/down and the other side to side ;)

cheers all... :D

Nice job

I've been reading up on wet sanding on the KDS Keltec website. They do a full days training but it's too expensive for me. I thought about buying an old panel from a scrap metal dealer and having a bash. Learning through trial and error in a safe environment.

that's basically what I done, although I used my Jeep as the test bed (as I do with all detailing... poor thing)

it's not really as scary or as hard as people think.... ;)

have a go, you will be fine.... :D

this was my first go, trying to get F**k the police out of the bonnet

No denying the results and finish on those cars. I have wet sanded a few scratches/key mark before but haven’t had the balls to sand as much damage as what you have done.

That is an epic recovery, wouldn't have even considered a polish...

Wow, thats amazing. Is the paint noticeably thinner now?

Wish i had a DA/ and skill to do this :( i have a scratch i filled the other day and want to flaten and polish it!
