paint headlights?

Is it possible to paint the interior of the headlights? I have the dark gray colored car, but the headlights are bright chrome. It looks ok, but I think that a body color or perhaps just a less shiny chrome would look better. Has anyone done this? Am I odd for even contemplating this?

I'm kinda considering this too. Mine's black, and thinking of either having the lens' smoked/tinted or spraying the inserts. The former will be easier as opening the headlights means butchering two sets of headlights.

This is how my Z4 started life. Very nice looking car! But I thought there was way too much chrome for a Sports Car from Germany - specially the lights!

So I started "Going Black". The headlight treatment is "Lamin-x" smoke headlight film -

I did not do the fog lamps as they are too small to notice anyway - and they need all their brightness! I have not noticed any difference in the Xenon lights driving at night.

Very happy with results. Good directions. Great mod!

That does look good. So that is just the lamin-X tint with factory insides? That looks good enough for me and without having to rip apart the lights.

you might get away with painting the chrome reflectors (if that is what you are referring to) in the US. is FL anything like CA where all you've got to do is pass the smog test?

this side of the pond almost certainly a no no. something about that nice shiny chrome helping you see better in the dark (kind of like carrots)

Not really... you can paint the insert without painting the silver reflectors around the bulbs... I painted the inserts on my TT matt black

As you can see, the silver reflector is left unpainted

Not easily, but guess it depends how much you want to change them...

I'd add CCFL's at the same time

You obviously have a 3.0i as those came with the silver lining in the headlights. It might be easier to find two lights from a 2.5 that are already black and swap them out.

Here's the thread that shows how to open the headlight assembly. http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2953&p=42571&hilit=+black+headlight#p42571

Tis true, I've read through cj's thread on it, fair play lots of hard work but the results do look really good.

That is called pride my friend.

Back on topic, Josh it is almost impossible to separate the lens from the rest of the assembly. It is a destructive process but can be done with effort. Many have tried only a few (barely) have succeeded. cj10jeeper is one of the successful ones. I believe there is a thread on it, perhaps in the "how-to" section.

Interesting one. Frankly you can't split a headlight and they need a sacrificial set to do it.

Given that the silver innered one's come of a higher designation model (3.0i) then I'd simply find an owner of a 2.5I or smaller nad do a straight swap. Cost nowt and is a 1 hour job per car to do it.

Just my 2p worth from someone who has now split, built and created 3 complete sets of unusual custom lights

Taking the light assembly apart is for braver souls than me! I am happy with my results for a small effort and easy to reverse.

if you wanted to remove it, is it hard? leaves any unremovable glue marks?

Easy on - peel off backing, spray a little water on lens, apply film, smooth with applicator and generous amounts of "303 protectent". A light touch with a hair dryer on the film makes it shrink and go on easy. Trim edges to fit.
Easy off - Light touch with a hair dryer allows film to lift off. Clean headlight lens with 303 protectant to get glue off.

We should all wear our national flag in a traditional sports car manor. On my makeover "Black Out" Z4, the flag is on the trunk. Thanks!

Hey Jack! How you been?

Hi Phil - Debby and I made the final move to Arkansas last Labor day. Have jobs and my Z4 - Life is Good! Really missed going to Homecoming last year. I actually got phone calls each day from several of you! I've been "doing little things" to my Z4 - drives and looks great! Very active ZSCCA chapter here! Beautiful state to do brisk drives on country and mountain roads! For now, Cincinnati is out - trying!
Hope to get us all together again!
I will PM you & 20Ducks soon!
