Paint finish

Having just bought an O8 plate Z4M, I noticed that the paint on the inside of the boot lid and in the lip of the body next to the rubber seal visible when the boot is open isn't painted the same as the car colour. My car is silver grey, but the inside of the boot lid and recess is sort of a satin black colour which fades into the car colour and ploished finish. Is this normal?

Doesn't sound normal... upload some pics and there will be plenty of helpful guys along to help you...

Mine is the same, its the normal paint finish as they are painted robotically with minimum paint, the dip process covers everything else and gives the corrosion protection

Yes this is quite typical.

Although mine is an 03.

As for rust protection  watch it carefully. I had a few very small rust spots but they were sorted under the 6 year anti corrosion warranty.

Thanks guys for thr reassurance. I had come to this conclusion through the day as in the engine bay it is just lacquered black undercoat. I suppose it saves paint and a bit of weight/

As an 03 owner you've got me slightly worried! Where about did the rust spots appear?

Around the edge of the boot where the rubber seal is you essentially have a channel. The hinge mechanism is bolted to the body in this channel.

I just had what looked like the black base coat here and it was here that I had some very small spots of rust. As it was still under anti corrosion warranty they sorted.

Had to get a BMW rep in to view and ok it. The dealer rep did let slip that he'd seen it before.
