paint disappearing?

I know this is a long shot without pics and i will try to upload later. I have a serious issue where the front wings of my 2003 Z4 fold into the engine bay. On the short vertical face the paint appears to have disappeared down to what I have been told is the white rustproofing. I realise there is no lacquer on these surfaces but I didn't expect this. The edges of the bonnet are not rubbing or anything and I've owned the car from new so I know theres not been any repairs etc. I wash the car with snow foam then born to be mild. The only thing is the car was machine polished a few months ago and I've been back to see the detailer but he says all shutlines were taped etc so nothing he done should have affected this. Anyone seen this before?

Is This spot the side edge of the bonnet where the side faces the inside of the fender of the engine bay. If so I believe I know what you are describing where it has an appearance as if it was not sprayed at all during the paint process?

he is on about this, i fixed mine over the weekend :)

Seen it on a few now, the paint wears thin because its has no factory clear coat on the shuts.

I can't see that will be anything to be concerned about, but I will check my facelift Z4 for you later and report back with some pictures.

I had exactly the same thing on my Sterling Grey Z4 (the inner wing, not the bonnet). It seems a really strange thing to happen as it in an area that is normally tucked away?

The bodyshop I use thinks that somebody may have tried to machine polish that area as it looks dull due to it not being lacquered at the factory. That is feasible, but I am not convinced. Anyone have any ideas why this happens?

It would appear BMW only lacquer the exterior of the cars these days, so boney and boot shuts look poor.

My only comment would be that if you do this take pictures before and during the process so that when you sell you can prove the car hasn't had an accident.
