Paddle Shifters on a Manual Transmission car?!?

Hi,
So I was looking at a used 2006 Z4 at a dealer's today and the car (3.0i with a 6 Speed Manual Transmission) also had paddle-shifters on the steering wheel!! Of course they didnt do anything but it looked suspicious to me.

Why would a manual transmission car have a steering wheel with Paddle Shifters?
Surely this is not normal?
Is this a manufacturing defect or does this indicate some shoddy fix up or aftermarket mod?

Anyone have a clue??

Thanks

that's not normal, and they wouldn't ever work.
sounds like the previous owner did a wheelswap with an auto to get the mfsw if you ask me.

but as Alan says - ask the dealer

Are you sure it doesn't have the SMG gearbox? Mine is a six speed paddleshift. Sounds like you are describing the superior transmission on an SMG car... did you drive it or just view it?

Gearstick/shifter the same as the one in this photo:

Unless that transmission is truly an automatic, the other cars with functional paddle shifters ARE manual--SMG and DCT. Of course, the 06 wouldn't have the DCT.

Of course I asked the dealer, he just shrugged and said I dont know... this guy is a used car dealer not a BMW dealership  .
And yes it is a full manual shifter, with clutch and all (didnt drive it but shifted it for sure).

So it does look like the previous owner switched out the steering wheel which makes me wonder why.

Doesnt the 2006 Z4 come with a multi-function steering wheel standard (this car has Premium package)?

Don't know about 06, but my 07 brochure (yes, I know, obsessive, but I keep it anyway) says the "leather-covered multi-function sport steering wheel" is standard equipment in the Z (roadster or coupe). Looks like the SMG was gone by 07 (at least in the States) as the only transmissions offered are manual 6 speed and Steptronic (with paddle shifters).

Surely this is just the previous owner who decided to get a MFSW fitted and just sourced one that happened to have paddles too.

If you don't wan the paddles I'm sure an auto owner will swap wheels for a standard MFSW.

If your really worried about something untoward, then walk away and find another Zed.

Agree - WALK AWAY, there are plenty of others out there in A1 condition.

Can some one tell me if a non MFSW vehicle is replaced with a MFSW is it plug and play ie..is all wiring in place to allow stereo control etc...or does it have to be wired.
