Paddle shift button convention

I'm close to wiring in my Paddle shift MFSW and need to verify standard set up, so what is the normal paddle use / convention on a Z4 paddle shift set up?

There are in effect 4 switches on the 2 paddles:

Left paddle push
Right paddle push

Left paddle pull
Right paddle pull

I'll assume left push is down a gear and right push up a gear as that instincively feels correct, but there are no marking to confirm use and I could easily wire it to almost any combination?

What about 'pull' is that the opposite to 'push'

Thanks

I assume this conversion is for the Auto not SMG ? on mine the action of both the left & right paddles are the same ie Pull = Upshift, Push = Downshift. I found out yesterday if you push the left & pull the right at the same time it reverts you back to SD full auto mode. Hope this helps ...

yes - it's for a standard auto box, replicating the push/pull of the shifter, but at the wheel

I'll assume yours is a standard fit item and therefore this is the correct convention. Seems odd as I thought some BMW's even had +/- marked on paddles.

I'll run a meter over it today and then wire it in and see what happens

Thanks

....as for the plastic M3 shifter

Yes mine is std fit item, I find that I only use the right hand paddle (so that will wear out soon !) unless it won't change down when I want it too then i bash them both forwards :headbang: !! They do not have any +/- markings

I would have found it more logical to have right do the upshift, and left the downshift (i.e. pull for both, never push). To push is for me an unnatrual movement when you quickly want to overtake, and you are gripping your wheel harder - then you have to make a push movement.

OK - It's tested, fitted and fully functional.

It's pretty much defined by its internal wiring what does what and it push either for down and pull either for up - that's it.

Also have the MF aspects working so now can control the volume and stations from the wheel and shortly the bluetooth telephony

Thanks for the input guys

Had a 5 series for a bit that had the paddles and I couldn't get used to it at all, just seemed really unnatural, whereas the Audi/VW DSG or SMG on the M3 was so much easier to get to grips with.

Left pull to change down, right pull to change up, the only way it should be.

Don't have paddles on the SLK, just boot it instead - saves having to work out which paddle to push/pull :D

Was it easy to do?

I think so, but without being funny that's probably based around level of experience with a whole variety of skills associated with this sort of project.
I'll do a write up then you can judge.

Just ran her around a few roads to test and actually it's very easy to work and does become intuitive. In sport mode the response up and down is instantaneous, regardless of revs. I even surprise myself that it would allow me to drop it down the box so hard and expected the software to say 'nice try - wait'

With all the safety features switched off I think we are going to have some fun now.... :driving:
