hey guys,

right I'm int he UK and just got my Z4 and love it to bits but the one thing id like to do is get a new padded steering wheel done by http://royalsteeringwheels.com/

My questions are:

1) do they stock Z4 steering wheels/ if I drive there will it take them long?

2) how much did you guys pay if you used this guy?

3) any pics of real wheels fitted would be a great help

4) what material/ padding thickness to use?

thanks in advance, going to ring them tomorrow to have a chat anyway but would like some feedback

I can't help you with any of your questions but I'm curious what the benefit of the royal steering wheel is over the M sport steering wheel (which I assume can be retrofitted)?

Few guys on the Porsche forum used Royal Steering wheels. Prices seemed to vary from £150 to £250 depending on what people got done. The best thing to do is call them with an idea of what you want. They will be able to quote prices and may give ideas of what you can get done. They may also be able to email some pics of work.

I plan on using them soon to get my wheel reprofiled and trimmed in alcantara.

For me the benefit over the M Sport wheel is that you can get different thickness, colour stitching, different panels/materials, 12 o clock ring added etc and it will still cost you less than a second hand M Sport wheel..... if you can find one.

I have a Royal Steering Wheel fitted to my Z3, and it's fantastic quality! I was local to him and he even fitted it for me. He makes them slightly padded which has a better feel than the previous skinny one. Also did the stitching in the tri colour M colours! Cost me around £115 inc fitting at the time.

He happened to have an identical wheel in stock, so it was a straight exchange swap. He does an exchange service by courier, and you send yours back when you changed it over assuming he has one!

If he doesn't have your wheel in stock then you would need to send him yours and wait. He is usually pretty busy, so it may not be the quickest turnaround. You may find it easier to source a spare wheel for him to do.

He buys the same leather the manufacturers use, so it's all top quality material. Can't recommend him highly enough - top quality work. r

That has done it for me now then,

Right well he responded to my emails and said £105 for a black steering wheel with 1.3mm padding and black stitching so I'm going to do that asap :D

thanks for the pics really appreciated :D

What padding would you need to make a non-m wheel feel like an m wheel?

Too many options could result in a bodged attempt to recreate an m wheel

Sent from my HTC One X

This looks like an amazing alternative to buying an m-steering wheel. Not to mention cheaper aswell! How much padding is needed to feel like an M steering wheel?

Great bunch of guys, got mine booked in ...they said it would take 2 weeks...

Ummmm, unfortunately that's what they told me. Still, it was well worth the wait.

I think they carry some in stock too....my car is a daily driver, so have emailed them a pic of my steering wheel, so will see what they can do. Am off for 2 weeks leave in August, so may drive down and leave the car with them...

Jesus! 6 weeks! Only use my car for nice weather but think I may need to get another for sending or wait until winter. It would be just my luck that we'd get several weeks of glorious weather the day I sent mine away.

On the point of possibly making a hash of it. With so many options available i've seen some right boggin looking efforts with carbon, alcantara, coloured rings, crazy grip profiles and multicoloured stitching. I think keeping it simple is the best option. All the ones posted here look amazing.

I have a spare Z4 wheel in the garage if anyone needs one while they send theirs off. All I'd ask is P&P and it back when done with. At least the car stays on the road all the time.

Lichfield based or in the Lakes next weekend. Can't offer more than that...

I paid my deposit today, and if by luck, the guy has my steering wheel in stock, so in 2 weeks it will be ready. Quick drive to Oxford and he will change it for £15, and £105 all in.....bargain, beats £600 for a new M Sport steering wheel....

Are you doing a trade with him for your old wheel? If so I may try to time it so I get your wheel.

Stark has an e89 - don't think it will fit an e85 ? Though I haven't seen anyone try :?

If he has the ///M Sport wheel in stock I'd be very tempted by this - or just a simple re-trim of mine would be great. Sh1t. Another one to get past Mrs B...

He takes my wheel and gives me another one. Let's you spec it down to the finest detail.....colours of threads, types of leather, padding or not etc etc...top bloke

Ah, never realised you had an e89. I'll give him a call if I don't spend the play money on lights this month.
