Son got a management light come on today whilst on the M6

Doesn’t over heat or use coolant , he put about 250 ml of coolant in but can’t remember when we last checked it. ( checked it once cool)
No loss of power & doing 35mpg on a run, not bad for a 5 speed 2.5 manual.it drives lovely.

Code won’t clear apparently

Any pointers , is it generally the electric thermostat is failing? Thinking thermostat water pump and expansion tank in one hit?

Brands to use / avoid would be great to please

Nice looking car. Looks like your not to far from me judging by the picture (Shropshire sculpture park)

Anyway i changed all 3 on mine as had the expansion tank leak and rest as preventative based on 100k mileage all original parts over 20 years old (bmw dont make things last that long anymore)

I used febi bilstein thermostat had no issues, mahle waterpump with uprated metal propeller also no issues and febi bilstein expansion tank that sadly only lasted 900 miles before failing in the same way as the original, so I went genuine tank at 3 times the cost of a febi but side by side you could tell the bmw was better quality, its done 5k miles now and all good, maybe I had a duff tank who knows but worth considering getting a good quality tank as its a faff to bleed the coolant system.

Also I used comma g48 coolant pretty sure its bmw spec.

Just had water pump,thermostat and expansion tank done. Also hose from radiator to thermostat and return to expansion tank as they were fraying, especially the one to thermostat ear waterproof pulley. Always go geniune for expansion tank and hoses.
