Hi all,
took the car out for a spin and the temperature gauge went from normal to max, pulled over couldn't see any signs of water seeping from hoses, radiator. Called AA man who ran pressure test and found no issues with the radiator cap or the pressure in the cooling system. He told me to drive the 22 miles back home but keeping an eye for any other issues. No issues on the journey home, so am i right in thinking its the temp switch. Plugged INPA and have the following two errors relating to coolant temp:

Error Location Number: 12000
Error Location Text: 2EE0 Coolant Temperature Sensor, Signal
57032EE0C10401180F2889DDFF00608189DDFF00607F89E1FC0D618B

Error: 1(3) Nr: 12000 2EE0 Coolant Temperature Sensor, Signal frequency: 15
Error Type: 1 (72 ) Short circuit to plus or line interruption
Readiness Flag: (16 ) Test conditions fulfilled
Error Status: (34 ) Error currently present, not yet OBD debounced
MIL - Status: (49) Error would cause the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) to light up
P-Code: P0118 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit - High F_LZ: 40

Error: 3(3) Nr: 12003 2EE3 Coolant Temperature Sensor, Plausibility: Gradient frequency: 1
Error Type: 8 (155 ) Temperature gradient too steep
Readiness Flag: (16 ) Test conditions fulfilled
Error Status: (32 ) Error currently not present, not OBD debounced
MIL - Status: (49) Error would cause the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) to light up
P-Code: P3198 Engine Coolant Temperature 1 - Gradient too high F_LZ: 40

Do i need to order the following:
13621433077 Temperature sensor, coolant, is it item #5 i need (see attachment)

thanks in advance.

Raj

Is the pump running?
Electric ones seem to just stop dead.
Take the top off the expansion tank, run the engine and see if water is running back into the top of the tank.
However, I believe that if the pump fails that's it.
Running it 22 miles home without the gauge going back up into the red would rule out the pump.
Please don't tell me it was in the red all that way???
If it was and turns out to be the pump failed then I'm pretty sure it would have been quite steamy by the time you got back.

Hi EZ and thank for giving me some pointers to look at before i head into buying bits n bobs.
forgot to mention the AA bloke ran the pump from his handheld diagnostic tablet as well as the fan and they were working, and yes the temp needle was in the red for the whole 22 miles back home :( . Like i said when i got home no leaks or anything untoward. The pump is a pierburg pump and that was replaced with the thermostat about 6 months ago, the car is a hi mileage car (176k) and i guess things (like sensors) will start to fail.
I will do the expansion tank task mentioned above and see how it goes, normally if the electric pump was to fail would i have seen an error in the INPA diags?

Cheers

If the electric pump had failed, you wouldn’t have made it 22 miles home. These engines generate a lot of heat and yours would have cooked itself.

The water pump would throw its own errors, so it's the temp sender or its wiring. A quick squizz at the wiring diagrams is needed to differentiate - most sensors can only fail short circuit to ground, very few have a +ve feed.

Hi All,
quick update, thought i had fixed it until today, when the temp gauge went into the red :headbang: . Ordered the temp sensor (Febi), should get it this week and will swap out. If this fails, then as mentioned by Scott (smorris_12), it a case of getting hold of a wiring diagram.

Thanks to all on the forum.
