The trouble with the auto enthousiasts is that they dont know anymore how to select the proper gearing...

At 75mph you can still go to 3rd if you want to. The revlimiter will come up at about 85mph I estimate (coupe has a low gearing final drive), depending on tyre size.
If you want to be fast you have to know by heart what gear you can select when you want to.
I wonder if the step down could have shifted down 2 gears in one go.... I dont think so, so that takes up some time too.
yes. A 3.0si should have no problems with a sub 200hp diesel. Besides the HP advantage it has a weight advantage too.

With any car you need to know where it makes the most power if you want to be fast. That means knowing where the shift points are in relation to the speed you're driving.
The car is fastest at the revs where it makes the most power, not the most torque.
With a NA petrol engine that is usually the easiest estimate you can make because most power is in the highest rev range and there is no sudden collapse of power (like on a turbo or supercharger that can have a surge point).

I misguidedly bought a 320td back in 2008 (my first diesel) - it seemed to go OK, until a few weeks into ownership I tried to overtake up a hill! Revs got to 4,500 and it was like it had hit a wall (even though the red-line was at 5,000). :-o
Managed to grab another gear in plenty of time, but that is when I realised power delivery was very different to a petrol. :roll:
5th at 75 will give fairly good acceleration but the 220 was probably at maximum acceleration. If it's a Mercedes it's almost certainly an auto, they've never been good at manuals and this is reflected in the number sold plus the type of buyer who opts for a Merc over a BMW. Even in a similar gear it's going to be much closer to where it makes peak power as noted already.

If he's accelerating or doing a higher speed already, then you're going to have to accelerate hard just to match him. Let alone stop him from undertaking you (I assume this was what he was doing). If you've not knocked it down gear wise sufficiently then you'll be hard pressed to catch him up.
