Overpriced cars

Before May this year I knew nothing about Z4s or how much they were selling for and now I have two albeit my runaround just now is the 2.0 56 plate. I'm heading up to the 3.0 this time next week so for my budget of £7k I got two cars but who will buy the small engine one? Years MOT, I will renew the alloys and some mid range non runflats added but that will add £500 I need to recoup . Where will the market be ? Can't imagine anyone on this or any BMW forum wanting the under powered Z4
It's a clean cabin , seat leather is good . May be better holding on until March/April next year as a car to get the roof down while admiring the North West Coast or if your less adventurous a run around Arran

Besides my Z4 I have a 2015 mini cooper S. I looked at the prices on Autotrader yesterday and cars of a similar spec and mileage are going for 1-2K more than I payed for the car 2 years ago. Does not help me much but does show how prices have gone up.

In the UK this year the number of used car sales has passed the number of new cars dues to availability. I think the prices will only go up specially because as in the US there is a big revival of the older BMW models as they are becoming classics and new BMWs are expensive as well as they do break more than usual. I'm glad i got my latest one still pretty cheap.

When I took my very low mileage 2.5SE for its MOT the tester said this car must be going up in value. It passed with no advisories and on my way out I was asked if I would be interested in selling. Not sure this proves much but at least it gives a clue as to the direction these cars may be going. This would however only apply to very low mileage, mint, desireable models. There are no shortage of E85 models but condition is the clue.

There has been a real hike in use car prices since brexit, not just on younger used vehicles, I’m seeing at auction some of our cars, old PCO mimi cabs going for stupidity high prices. If the demand is there, let’s make hay whilst the sun shines I say :) :) :)
It's not due to Brexit. It's due to the worldwide semiconductor shortage causing a lack of new car production.

From today's Telegraph:

Car production slump boosts second-hand motor market

The value of the average three-year-old car jumped £477 during August
By Alan Tovey, Industry Editor 29 August 2021 • 4:30pm

Second-hand car prices have risen for an unprecedented sixth consecutive month after automotive factory production plunged to a 65-year low.

The value of the average three-year-old car jumped £477 during August, a 3.7pc rise, according to data from Cap HPI, the body the industry relies on the track pricing.

Drivers have more money to splash out on a used car this year given the ongoing restrictions on foreign holidays, as well as savings built up during lockdown.

Derren Martin, Cap HPI’s head of valuations, described the increases as “extraordinary”, saying the market was “on steroids, crazy”. He added: “Vehicles have increased, on average, by more than one-fifth of their value in less than half a year. In normal times, they would have depreciated by 5pc during this period, so a swing of over 25pc has occurred.”

The reversal of normal trends in second-hand cars has been caused by a unique set of circumstances – and is not likely to let up for several months.

A global shortage of semiconductors vital to car production means manufacturers have had to cut the number of new cars rolling off production lines, meaning more people are turning to the used car market.

Car makers are focusing supplies of semiconductors that they can secure on their most profitable – and usually most expensive – models, putting off less well-heeled motorists from buying a new vehicle and steering them to look for used alternatives. Forecasters are predicting that the supply squeeze could last well into 2022.

The situation has been exacerbated for UK-built cars, as the “pingdemic” slowed down output as car makers and their suppliers suffered staff shortages.

This drove down the number of cars rolling out of UK factories in July to its lowest level since 1956.

Just 53,438 cars were built in the month, down almost 40pc on a year ago, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. Although car production so far this year is almost a fifth higher than during 2020 at 552,361 vehicles, it is still down almost 30pc on pre-pandemic levels.

Faced with a limited range cars available and delivery waits which are much longer than normal, drivers have increasingly been scouring used car market.

Mr Martin said some surprising vehicles at the three-year mark have posted the biggest price rises. While “toys” such as used Mazda MX-5 sports cars rose 45.8pc – some £5,250 – over the past six months as drivers sought fun outlets, he was was shocked to see Mercedes V Class people movers rise by 44pc or £11,000, and Vauxhall Zafira go up 41.5pc or £3,575.

Regarding the classic status in the US - see here - a 2003 3.0i roadster with 18k miles sold at auction for $26k - with standard, non-heated seats to boot!

In my opinion the Z4 is almost ridiculously underpriced here in the UK, so I'd be surprised if low mileage early E85s don't start to gain classic status soon - but then I might be just a tad biased...

There's one or two on here at the mo

If they sell, are they just expensive and not overpriced?

Or maybe they are priced at what the market dictates.....but perhaps it most likely indicates that there's a bunch of cheap bastards on this forum. :P
