Overheating Problem

Good point, looking online at some youtube videos it doesnt seem that tough a task to replace so Im presuming the indie should be charging around £250-£300 for replacing it?

Heard back from Adrian at Gilberts today who said he's never heard of the thermostat being an issue before more likely assessment (from a brief description) is the water pump with an estimate of £800 to change.

This seems steep to me.. what do you all think? I will call BMW tomorrow and ask for their equivalent quote..

When i bought my coupe the water pump had recently been changed & iirc the invoice was around £400 :?

Looking at GSF / ECP water pumps come in around £400 add £50 for coolant and flush, the rest must be labour. So £350 labour for a 4 hour job is £85 an hour if my maths is right and seems much higher than I remember even dealer rates being? (I recall them being around £50/hour) but may be completely wrong..

London rates is well, well over £100 for dealers. More like £150 there.

Ah ok .. so an indy I would presume is about £50-£100 then..

Just called BMW and parts prices are:

£95.74 Thermostat
£22.15 2 bottles of coolant
£494 Electronic Water Pump & £6.11 fixing screws

I think an investment in a odb error scanner is definitely worthwhile if the WP is actually fine..

Indeed, it is a bit vague. (PS if anyone cant read the pics, click on them and it will expand :) )

Looks like its not getting power but im sure I heard it whining on the car when the issue first occured so unfortunately I dont think its a simple wiring issue..

BMW mini parts can do it for £400 inc vat now I just have to see if I can get my friend to come help me replace it for mates rates labour or else I will have to fork out the close to £800 on my indy..

It does work... there are a lot of error codes, I dont think they have ever been cleared when I clicked on that section it stated "fault not currently present" so may have been at some stage or maybe came up when replacing battery?

Has anyone heard anything about the Pierberg WPs?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-Wassepumpe-Kuhlwasserpumpe-Kuhlmittelpumpe-Elektrisch-1er-3er-5er-7er-X1-X3-/151674560273?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_77&hash=item2350821f11

They are less than half the price of BMW ones and seem to be lots for sale in Germany..

Have you looked on TIS to see what sort of job it is to replace. With the prices you've been quoted I'm guessing it's not easy

I didnt install TIS but I can take a look. Im not too handy with a spanner, but my mechanic friend will probably charge me £100 plus travel whenever he can get up from Billingshurst, only problem is it will have to be a weekend and with getting married next month they are quite precious at the moment...

Ordered this one:

now thinking about doing the thermostat at the same time..

There is life after marriage you know

Update on this, still waiting for DHL to deliver the part from Germany (was dispatched on Monday!)

I have been quoted £258 from BW Auto Repairs http://www.independentbmwspecialist.co.uk/ a local Indy for labour to replace the pump only, Jason has a good reputation online as an ex-BMW service man with several years experience, I may just get it done here.
