i basically mean "our" z4m stock fan.

source a new stock fan, buy the uprated rad ( if you want an alloy version) and change your thermostat to a new stock one while your their, you've basically done a mini cooling system overhaul at that point.

As our fan is controlled via the ecu , it will be difficult and potentially messy to wire in a non stock fan, deco stick with what we have.

hahahahahaha thanks ........ I suffer from dementia you know cos Im old and crinkley ......

Sourcing the fan has been a problem up to now, I'm thinking a trip to the Dealers Parts dept at the weekend.

Have spent a few days online trying to figure this out ..............

The Z4M fan assy ...... is a 600W affair ... other BMW items are 390W ....... Replacement from the Dealer is 477 plus VAT
The Radiator ....... which I want to change if I'm changing the fan ....... Replacement from the Dealer is 262 plus VAT
The Thermostat ...... which I believe needs changing regularly ..... Replacement from the Dealer is 48 plus VAT

Looking at 920 quid all in ............
In all honesty that's the cheapest I have been able to find anywhere ...... :?

Not that much if you say it fast ...........

Sure it ain't just a crappy thermostat?

+1 on that, as that is the cheapest option why not change the stat & see if it resolves the problem, if you still want to change the rad then you can do so at your leisure.

the fan is defo not kicking in ...... and thats not thermostat related .......
after trawling loads of sites ..... it seems the fan is likely goosed....... and everybody nearly chokes when they find out the price.

changing the rad is just personal ....... I figure if Im going that far, Id do it all.....

its a fair point ...... but I dont have a lot of time available ........

Plan one is to change it all this weekend ..... hopefully sorted so I can use the car.

Plan two .... would be to book it into the dealers, have them diagnose the problem, thats 125 quid and then another week gone by.

Plan 3 is to take it apart and try and check everything ..... then order parts .... but then the car will be in bits for a couple of weeks .........

............ small upside on plan one ...... if I change everything and the fan still does not work and I have to take it in for diagnostics ....... I will still have a good spare fan ..... which I can smugly store or sell (I know now that there is a market for working spare fans ...... :) )

Man maths at its finest :D

so to confirm your oil temps are warm??

your stock oil cooler may be fucked?? they take a real beating because of their placement.

aha ... Theres a curve ball lol ..... well yes ....

but then, the fan still doesn't operate ......... lol

id replace fan, really look at the oil cooler too, id expect water temps to rise before oil temps in an overheating situation.

 I'm glad you understand

Right then latest update ...

As per shipkiiller's instructions, the fan came out in about 5 mins .... Radiator followed in another 15 mins. Easy Peasy. ..
Downside is that with all the new bits ....... Fan is still not switching on so dropped it off at my local BMW dealers to have them plug in ..... And get it sorted.

Anyway, most important bit .... The radiator looked almost new, but it was about 75% clogged up with road dirt.
Pressure washer sorted it ...... So now I have a spare :D

If anybody is interested in cleaning their's .........
I'd suggest ...... Remove the top plastic cover, 2 screw and about 8 plastic poppers, unplug the fan, easy to get at plug on the left ..... Unscrew one torq bolt on left (top of rad) ..... Remove plastic popper ( top of rad on right) then lift out fan.
Then easy to pressure wash radiator from the back .......

It's time to vote for your ...... "DICK OF THE WEEK"........ :D

Just had a call from my dealer ...... the Z4M is ready for collection.

After plugging in and running a full diagnostics thing, they found a ........ errrrrr ........ broken wire
in the loom ......

It'll be about 2 more hours before I've scraped the egg off my face

Guess I've got a spare radiator and fan ...... :driving:

Good thing is they also did a load of tests to see if there was any "overheating damage " .... not sure what yet ..... sure they will tell me when I pick it up :D

Interesting development ......
Took the Z4M out for a wee hoon around the borders to check that the overheating this is defo fixed ...... for the first hour, oil temp gauge was rock solid at 95 degs which I believe is ok ...... then it just dropped to around 85 degs and stayed there no matter what the traffic conditions or how I drove it ......

anyway, well happy now its fixed.
