Overheating ...... Now Sorted

Fan is not working ...... and in slow moving traffic oil temp starts coming up to about 95 degs C.
Also looking at the radiator, it has seen better days ........
Spent hours looking around threads on here and elsewhere and Im going to replace the fan and the radiator........

Does anybody have any idea where I can get parts online, Ive just spent hours looking without success. Only option I see right now is nipping down to my local BMW dealer .......

What temp does your oil normally sit at? I'm sure mine is about 90 degrees normal operating temp once warmed up?
 
its around 85 - 90 at motorway speeds, gets up to 95 around town .
A few weeks ago whilst I was waiting for herself to come out of work, the amber warning light came on whilst idling ...... never really gave it a thought as it went out as soon as we got moving.

This morning I thought Id just test it in the drive way ...... left it idling, took a while but temp continued to rise till warning lights came on but no fan ........ knackered fan on BMW's is quite common I believe ....... checked out the rad and about 30% of the fins are bent over, so that would affect airflow .......

Defo need to replace the fan and if I have to get into it that far, might as well put a new rad in as well ........ just cat find OEM parts online.

Can find a rad on Euro Car Parts but no fan .........
 
Reading about it ......

There is a ground wire, a red 12 volt permanent feed and a third switching wire connected to errrrrr something.

Im not sure how to actually test it ...... ie what voltage to I have to put down the switching wire to activate it ..... apparently its a 2 speed fan ....
 
The feed is activated by the ECU..... Its a modified signal as the fan shares the duty for AC cooling too..

Mine went and had to source from BMW in the end...
 
yes the fan is controlled via the ecu.

if your engine was overheating in terms of coolant theirs a 2 phase warning system yellow to tell you its getting hot and Red once your actually overheated.

if the fan needs changing its not a cheap part :headband:

could this be a good time to go for an alloy rad if you changing??
 
Zionsville do a direct replacement larger capacity unit with stock style hose outlets!! It's awesome !

try cleaning the radiator first, I found tons of leafs and crap beneath the cover and its now operating noticeably better.

I've asked the to quote for a full kit, Radiator, fan and the mechanical thermostat conversion. :D
 
After your recent Jaguar purchase, I would have thought that if you let your wife anywhere near the radiator it would freeze up due to frosty reception.... :lol:

we already have mechanical thermostat and our fan ecu controlled setup is very very good. Don't be confused buy the e46 section.
 
That was going to be my next question ........
I saw the mechanical thermostat...... that I liked very much ......

Are you saying I could buy their complete E46 Rad and Fan and it would slot straight in ??????

are these the bits I need ....?? the E46 M3 rad and fan ...?

firstly that thermostat isn't related to our engine.

the rad and fan setup isn't either.


look in the z4 section and you'll see our radiator. Also our fan is a very nice item and controlled via the ecu, this is more than unto the task we are asking of it, its variable speed too.

I'll be ordering the z4 specific Rad myself, it even has the BMW style quick release outlets already.
