Overheating - advice pls

2008 2.5 Si overheats, had the car for 2 weeks max, driven around 300 miles. Overal 135k on the clock.

Trying to figure out the problem, shown to Indy a few times. can’t find a fault ( yet ) Gauge goes to red after about 1 mile of driving, does come back down again if I restart the engine a few time. Sometime it goes red and cools down by it self. Coolant leakes when the engine is really hot but no signs of leakage in general. , Im just praying it’s not a cracked head....

What can it be... water pump, head gasket, thermostat, rad. is there anything else that’s a known cause?

No smoke from the exhaust, no gunk in the oil cap, no foul ( burning smell ) from engine bay. Had oil changed and it was just dirty black oil... no sign of water in there.

Do I just take a gamble and change the water pump and thermostat? I don’t wish to throw money down an empty well with reason.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Have taken to a specialist and the car worked just fine that day so they couldn’t say anything. They was so busy that they barely had time to even look at my car properly.

Change the pump, stat and expansion tank. Common probs, don’t drive it until you sort it.

Overheating is not good at all.

Hi, n52 engine uses an electronic water pump that’s prone to failure & at your mileage it may even be the 2nd one that’s dying :o
Stop driving it & get it changed as you’re doing damage by overheating it.

THanks for the reply, cars been parked up safely even since I noticed it going into red and did a few test runs afterwards. You’ve given me a peace of mind

I’ll change all of those, there is no way I’ll be buying the parts of BMW, £700 plus Vat for stat & pump alone..

^^ what he said......... apart from no oil, overheating is pretty much the only way to kill these engines, if it cooks the block is ruined. Don't drive it.

Although the expansion tank is a fairly common failure point the only actual problem you are likely to have at the moment is the pump itself. The stats are electronically controlled and seem extremely reliable. Some people just change them while they have the pump off as they are attached to each other but I certainly wouldn't say it's essential.

Is that the one for £211? Wow, thanks for the advice, I’d have stayed away thinking it’s a fake or scam. Just getting car checked out by AA I type, about to do some sort of test.

Sounds about right for the Pierburg OEM one.

Just so long as it's a Pierburg pump that's right - it should come with a gasket and single-use aluminium fitting bolts.

My E91 325i also needed a new one at 135K last year!
