Overdue Oil Service

Just been going through my Coupe's service history records as its approaching 2 years since I bought the car AUC and to my shock I see ..

The last oil service was actually during an Inspection 1 on 17/08/11

Now this isnt the end of the world as that was only around 7500 miles ago. However I do want to get it serviced because although the car is garaged, I do appreciate oil degrades over time, etc.

So I'm looking into options of which oil to go for and where to service it.

Anyone have any recommendations of local indies / dealers in the Hounslow / West London area?

If I go for purchasing the oil myself should I go for Valvoline? Triple QX, Shell? Mobil? (discounts at ECP mean the most I would spend would be on Mobil at around £80 for 2 x 5L)

Will I need all 6.5 litres?

Also should I get my mechanic friend to do it or get it done professionally? I know he can do it but cant stamp the service history (although I can get an invoice from him).

Lastly anyone else had an oil service done recently on a 3litre? What are the going rates?

Cheers in advance!

As long as the oil is BMW Approved LL04 any of them will be fine, but most stick to Castrol I would say.

Have you tried Opie Oils?

paid £113 a year ago.

queried it as they included 1.25 hours labour but this was their standard oil service charge apparently....

Just had main dealer oil service/ safety check plus micro filter £200 .Euro car parts quite often have good deals on castrol 0/30 to correct spec . You will need 6.5 litres for correct amount .

Thanks guys, I'm struggling to figure out which service I require, he're the history:

Pre-Delivery
Oil Service, micro filter and brake fluid 14735 Miles 10/09
Inspection 1, brake fluid, air cleaner 30147 Miles 08/11

so is this now due for the "3rd engine oil change" oil service or is it a regular one? Or are 3rd changes irrelevant for the petrol engines?

According to http://www.maindealerdiscount.com

There are 2 different prices for oil services (one including micro-filter). Looking at the service book though, every oil service includes micro-filter? Or am I wrong.

I was looking at going for Mobil oil as thats what my mechanic friend recommends these days : Mobil 1™ ESP 0W-30 but cant see if its LL04? ECP recommends Mobil 1 ESP 5W30 which is confusing and neither say they are LL04?

It's due an oil service.

Oil, inspec1, oil, inspec2, oil, inspec1......

You should know that by now :poke:

They must sit and watch it drain out. :tumbleweed:

Get in car, drive it on to ramps, lift ramps up,position drain tray undo sump plug check oil is coming out ok. (about 10minutes)
Get big rag and filter wrench, remove filter and dispose of filter and oil in an environmentally friendly way. ( 5 minutes)
Go and fetch Oil Filter and micro filter from the super speedy spares department, 5 minutes
Get pipe clamps, Clamp off hoses, remove micro filter, replace with new one, remove pipe clamps. (10 minutes)
Do full safety check on car, checking that your car is safe for them to give back to you and whether or not they can make some more money from you on pads, discs, etc etc.( 20 minutes)
Ffit oil filter and sump plug with new washer ( 5 minutes)
Drop Ramp, fill with oil, check level, start car, back up on ramp, check for leaks, back down. Reverse car out and wash and hoover ( 20 minutes)

Ta dah! 1 hour and 15 minutes.

I waited whilst they did it, so unless they can slow time down in the next room they are overcharging labour. I wasn't grumbling, merely politely enquiring!

BS, If you're looking for a reliable Indy, I'd recommend CPC Performance Engineering in Amersham:

Phil is a good bloke and really knows his stuff. I take both my ///M and 320d there.

Cheers BMWZ4MC I will have a look, way out though..

Just got a call from Berrys Chiswick. Oil change + Micro filter £280 + VAT

I laughed told her indies were quoting £140 and hung up. 5 mins later she rang back to say £250 and I said thanks for wasting my time :tumbleweed:

Thanks for everyones replies, booked in with http://www.gilbertsforbmws.com/ on Friday. £160 inc VAT, good reviews online, will feed back!

Sounds about right, I had a quote from stratstone derby for around £200+VAT, local bmw indy £120+VAT.

It's annoying paying for an oil service as it's such a simple job, but on a car like a Z4 it's required to keep up the value of the service history.

As a side note, is it just me that finds it odd that garages seem to be the only places that give all prices "ex VAT"? Whenever I speak to them on the phones etc i'm constantly doing maths to work out the price it will cost me

And that sir is how it should be, Lest you forget how much you really pay in tax. Which is why governments love folk who don't like maths and want tax included prices.

I understand there's tax payable, but why do garages in particular quote £100+VAT rather than just £120? Is there some actual reason?

I'm not really bothered about how much goes on tax, I just want to know what it will cost me :P

Car serviced and returned .. seems slightly less responsive now although I guess thats normal and I didnt really get a chance to get it up to temperature..

Only thing is Adrian at Gilberts has put that its due a brake fluid change? Is that true? Its done 8000 miles (2 years 4 months) since the last one..?
