Overcharging

Early (2003) model.

Broke down on the way to work the other day - dash lit up like a Christmas tree, lost PS, traction control etc etc

Recovery truck ran a voltmeter across the battery with the car running - it got up to 16.5v before we thought better and switched it off.

Had it towed to the garage - they think alternator fault. I'm thinking voltage regulator. Could it be both?

It's at the garage but I'm tempted to drag it home (less than a mile), start with the regulator (as it's much cheaper and less involved) then go from there...thoughts anyone?

(also where is the best place to source these parts? Want to avoid main dealer cost (obviously) and it looks like a bit of a minefield...)

Well, technically, it is an alternator fault :P

If the voltage regulator is available separately then I’d definitely change that first

Yes, regulator pack would be prime suspect. I'm surprised you managed to get 16.5V across your battery though - a healthy battery would draw hundreds of amps before its terminal voltage would be so high so I suspect you may have a duff battery also.
