Over-Adjust Headlights?

Is it possible to screw the headlight adjuster so far one way so it becomes disconnected?

My o/s headlight was pointing too far left, so I started to turn the white-nut under the bonnet. I shortly realised I was turning it the wrong way, but turning the other way wouldn't make the headlight point to the right. Now I find the adjuster doesn't move the beam at all.

Is is possible to turn the adjuster so that it no longer engages? Any ideas how to fix?

... I thought I might try manually putting pressure on the rear of the projector unit to move it back to more central position whilst someone tries winding the adjuster. Any comments on this welcome, esp. what is the adjustment mechanism.
