Over 70 license renewal

I know this has been discussed already on here so my apologies for bringing it up again but as I am 70 in November I have just received a letter from the DVLA telling me to renew my driving license. If I do this over the internet I will lose my 'c' class for driving over 3,500kg to 7,500kg vans, if I want to keep this I will need to do it through the post. This means I need to get my GP and my Optician to sign a form to say I am okay. This will no doubt cost a lot of money every 3 years. Has anyone else on here bothered to keep their 3,500kg to 7,500kg status or is it a bit pointless. My main concern is that my daughter will most likely need me to move house for her in the future and I think the Luton Transit 3,500kg will be too big. On the form it states from 3,500kg to 7,500kg so presumably this doesn't mean up to 3,500kg. Your thoughts will be most welcome, thank you. Mike.

Standard modern licence 3500kg max laden weight (cargo, fuel, etc). Over that and up to 7500kg max laden weight is your C class grandfathers rights category which i also have but haven't used in many years!

The GP does not need to charge for that but is allowed to, so non guesses on what the majority do ….

Same with gun license

Didn't know you got a letter when your 70, or is it just a coincidence that your licence needs renewing?

It does die everyone, and no, it is not a letter from the king

It needs renewing every three years post 70.

The GP charged me for my FAC as well - even tho I had acted as "the patient" several times on request for her group pf post grad doctors!
I certainly didn't ask for a fee for the hour I spent being interviewed each time,

They took my C Class off when I went on Insulin for Diabetes and have a 3year restricted licence, I renew that online. I could have applied to retain my Class C but would have had to go through the Doctor and pay him/her for doing so. Retired so didn't need the Class C anymore so didn't bother. Just abide by their rules now by testing blood before driving.

It’s a bit bonkers really - Apparently I can’t drive a Luton van but I can drive a car capable of 155mph or a Land Rover with a caravan!

Thank you all ever so much, I have never needed to use a van that size and a larger Transit will have enough room. It must be up to 3500kg as that seems to be what all the hire companies use. Ronk, I’ve been looking into this and I thought Luton vans were within the 3500kg. Anyway I’ve decided not to have all the agro as wifey has been looking into this and found that over 75s can’t drive over 3500kg anyway. Not worth it really for 5 more years. Old age, ain’t it just great  :(

Mikey,
While you can still drive a 7.5 tonne 'truck' on your grandfather rights, I say do it!
Just rent one for the weekend....they are great!
Go and buy a 'Yorkie' bar and revel in being a 'truck driver' for a day. I have rented a few in the past; they are seriously good fun. The air brakes, the 5mph top speed in first gear, the lofty driving position, the sheer size of the things.

On the flip side; don't worry too much if you lose your rights to drive them; kids of 18 have no hope of ever driving one without taking an additional test. Don't think they can even tow a caravan (not that anyone would want to) without a test.

And NO; getting old is no fun whatsoever! :(

PS: you spelled 'license' wrong; it is 'licence' in the UK! :poke:
