Can anyone reccommnend an outdoor cover to put over the car - live on a very leafy street - and lots of tree sap in the summer and about 200 leaves a day all over it - the original BMW one is £200 - just think thats too much for one, and would prefer one at about £100, which keeps the car dry, won't scuff the paint work with movement and is pretty secure.....any thoughts?

Try http://www.cover-zone.com/prices_records.php or http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ultimate-Weather-Protection-Breathable-Waterproof/dp/B003N9RFQ2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1288969336&sr=8-1. Not tried them myself as I built a garage for my Z :D

Personally, I have always found that covers designed by the manufacturer fit best. I had the BMW made one for my 2007 for 3 years and it served me well. I ordered the BMW one for my 2011 that is on order as well. Fits perfectly and the material will not scratch the car (as long as the vehicle is clean when putting it on, but that holds true for any cover). Part number is: 82 11 2 157 090. MSRP is $219.00, but if you shop around (Ebay, etc) you can find it for a bit less as I did.

Here's an example:

I had a factory OEM cover for my last MiINI. Ended up not using it as I found in windy conditions part of the cover moved slightly over the front of the bonnet/wing area therefore rubbing on the paint and that was starting to dull the it!

I used the BMW one on my z4 at least 5 days a week, on and off 2x a day for 3 years, no issues with fitnent or paint rubbing off. The BMW ones fit quite well, 45 mph winds couldn't move it off.

Think thats the way to go, it's £200 - and going to order it today.....and hey you get the BMW logo on the cover on the front! haha

Good choice, just one thing to keep in mind, as I found it to be an issue long term. The noah material (same with any car cover made of this material), while they say on the care instructions that you can machine wash or dry it, if it gets wet, I would avoid using a machine dryer if you can avoid it. Over time, the dryer tends to degrade the material making it flake and later fall apart. I had my first one for 3 years, but by about 24 months, the cover was flaking like dandruff all over my car, and falling apart too easily to use, I had to replace it. Tis was using a dryer maybe once a month or so when the cover got wet. The replacement, I never used the dryer, ad it help up like a champ :-). It does come with this annoying storage bag attached that you have to roll up in back under the cover, but most people just cut it off and keep the cover separate, just mentioning...

The wife has orderd me a BMW outdoor cover for mine and haggled them down to £166 including the VAT

I've bought a cheap breathable cover for mine, just for the times its sat when I'm on holiday etc. I can't justify the £260 for the OEM cover, it won't get used enough.

Its a very good fit, has straps to prevent the wind lifting it and provided the car is clean the material is quite soft and shouldn't rub. Its water resistant rather than waterproof. I wanted this because waterproof covers can induce mould inside the car after a week or two, and it stinks. Sure a bit of water might get through, but it will then evaporate and the cover will prevent sap, bird poo etc from getting through.

I never got one in the end, as I don't have a driveway, always too concerned someone would steal it off the car. Got a cheap one but not fully waterproof....but keeps the bloody leaves and bird crap off...

How are these in practice regarding swirls, if used on a daily basis?

Sure, clean the car before covering, but who does that on a daily basis? Surely, slight grit/mud on the bodywork will slightly scratch when putting the cover on?

Theyre not intended for daily use, who would?

They're to protect the car when not used daily. I'd you want to protect it daily get a garage!

oh, ok. I thought some people were implying they used them every day.

Mine's a daily driver, so no good to me, although I can see the benefits if leaving the car for a while, on holiday for instance, to protect from bird poo!

I can confirm even if the car is clean the outdoor BMW cover marks the paint if you are not really carefull.

I used the outdoor cover in a garage as sometimes cats can get in.

I began to notice than when taking the cover on and off a couple of slight swirls/scratches appeared.

I use very soft sheets and put the cover over them. worked a treat as the garage is dehumidified.

I only have use of the garage in the winter. So now it's covered in tree sap and pollen :headbang:

The cover blows off to easily in the wind.

Going to get a carcoon instead.
