Out of interest would you?

Hi Guys

Been looking around for a coupe now for a few weeks and have seen in the past CAT cars as an option. Now I would never touch a C but a D is something am not worried about. I maybe getting offered one tonight as am awaiting confirmation on price etc on whether its a green light or not??? So will update ... followed by an ad for my current car I would think!

I would happily pay for a non - cat as you get the value back when you sell , and of course when you buy a CAT D you pay a lot less so in return sell for less in the future.

Am interested in other people feeling on them and also when you feel is a fair price??

Car Spec - 07 Coupe Sport - 30k Miles - FDSH with book and bills etc- Blue Colour - individual Blue matching interior , guessing normal non-cat value is 12500-13000 but what about a CAT D???

I know many guys and gals would not want one , which is cool but as am looking at it as a keeper so being it’s a fairly specialist car I feel it should maintain reasonable residual value even as a CAT

Thanks in advance

Patrick

Nothing wrong with damaged - repair cars so long as the work was done properly, and by that I mean extremely properly.

Values are around 20% below list, it depends on what your plans are.
if you are planning on keeping for a long time then I see no problems, if you are planning on swapping cars on a regular basis I would probably leave it alone. There are too many cars on the matket right now and it will take a while before that situation changes ......

I'd not expect a CAT D to sell for more than 75% of a standard car.

BUT...I'd have to be 100% sure that everything that was fixed properly, and that's where I'd never be able to overcome my suspicions that the seller was telling porkies or hiding something.

I'm yet to see an advert for a CAT D Z4 that's had a 'repair list' that has looked like it would make it worthy of writing off in the first place - especially with some only needing a bumper and wing, yet being written off over a £5k bill on a £15k car. Always makes me suspicious!

Good points guys kinda what I was thinking , IF I was to get it would you recommend a AA / RAC inspection? :? or are they a bit of a waste of money

Its a personal choice, personally I wouldnt buy a cat car regardless of the price, there already so much hassle in life, why add to it?

Exactly what you should do.

As said, if you intend to run it for a good while, and the price is right and the report OK, I'd go for it.

Any secondhand car could have a hidden repair history so not buying a car just because it's cat C or D is a bit short sited IMO.

However I would want full history of pre repair status including photos just so I knew what I was buying along with receipts for parts used etc. This would also help when selling in future.

One of our foreign friends has put an E85 and an E89 back on the road after they were written off and did all the work himself, as this is where it can become cost effective where to insurance companies it isn't.

I've said it previously but my car is cat d, damaged wing, bootlid, bumper and minor dent on the sill cover, bought from a body repair shop and it was as good as new when I saw it and bought. Since then have had the bumper off to repair the plastic clip holder (which was snapped in accident?), and bought replacement sill (from ebay) and can confirm no chasis damage, investigated when had 4 wheel alignment and no creases in the underbody or bumper supports etc. All in all a great car and no creaks or squeaks can be heard in the cabin, which I have seen reported by owners of non cat cars! Inspection highly recommended though.

x2

why rush Paza? if you are anything like me, you want a change after a few years and then you'll have the same issue when come to sell. don't bother, wait for the right straight car and then buy, that's my opinion :)

I bought my zed via private listing. I found that it had been in a sizable accident but not written off. I talked to the repair shop. I felt that it had been sorted correctly. Said shop specializes in European cars. The shop even stated that they have a lifetime warranty on their work. 18 months later. Having doubled the zed's mileage, done laps at Nurburgring. I have had no problems.

I bought it to have fun in. While our Zed's are great cars. They are not Farrari like investment grade. To be honest. I would have more concerns over buying a modified Zed. Or an accident free car that has seen a lot of track time and always driven hard.

Good post :)

And I completely agree - Cat C or Cat D wouldn't put me off as long as it's priced accordingly (i.e. cheap enough compared to non-Cat versions) and repaired to the correct standard.

Very true. I wouldn't like to guess at the percentage of cars on the road that have had some sort of bump/accident damage or have had paintwork done at some point in their lifetime. I lot of people appear to have front-end resprays to cover up stonechips, etc - but to me ANY evidence of ANY paintwork, regardless of reason, would be a cause for concern.

I dont know,

Its not worth the risk and the 25% extra on the prices of cars at the moment isnt a lot so it would be a straight one every time. Wouldn't even look at a CAT C or D. Those Letters scare me lol.

I wouldn't want my car jeopardised in anyway shape or form. From a guy who is not particularly mechanically minded I would have to take someones word for it and I dont like that idea. At the end of the day it is your life and you put yourself in such a car. Even if the work is the best of the best at the end of the day its still a category... and it has been in an accident and anything like that its not worth touching IMHO.

Well am going for it I think got confrimation tonight its all go , its being booked in for a new Mot and a inspection is being carried out this week and will be collect on Saturday. As long as everything checks out , its a done deal.

The price agreed is very acceptable :D altought it does not have a comfort pack it does have some striking "indivdual leather" and xexons etc, I bit retro fitting coming its way!

I always knew they would be some concerns and that it would not be an option at for others at all , but it was refreshing to see some real construction "mooting" being carried out regarding postive and negatives they have been more postive reactions than I expected :o so am very pleased am getting my bad boy!! and the misses is going to get her new kitchen now as well so a win win!!

So my Zed's up for sale then ... here goes

Lucy's car is a good example, it had a major front end smash but won't have been reported and TBH I wouldn't buy it because of that if it came up for sale.

That amd the fact it's a coupe

Double edged sword the forum, there are plenty of cars that I would not buy because of what I have seen.

Indeed. Always a useful thing to look back at a seller's previous posts - I even tracked down the previous owner of my Z4 on another non-Z forum when I did my pre-purchase research...

Heaven help anyone advertising on here and not disclosing it! Shot down in flames wouldn't come close :poke:
