Our friends in the North

Due to the weather conditions, our satelite signal has been a bit flakey for the last couple fo nights, so I decided to watch a DVD boxed set that I got for Christmas. Nine epsisodes of a really great television series first broadcast in 1996 and which I didn't see at the time.

Written by Peter Flannery 'Our Friends in the North' follows the story of four friends – Nicky (played by Christopher Eccleston), Mary (played by Gina McKee), Geordie (played by Daniel Craig) and Tosker (played by Mark Strong) who all grew up in Newcastle upon Tyne in England. The series spans the period from 1964 until 1995 and tells the story of the events that have shaped British history at the time (including property corruption in Newcastle, the miners strike and the edemise of Old Labour to name but a few) and the friendships and relationships of the four characters over the decades.

If you haven't seen 'Our friends in the North', I thoroughly recommend it to you.

I think the character that Alun Armstrong played in the series was based on 'Mr Newcastle' aka T. Dan Smith who ended up in prison for corruption with disgraced Architect, John Poulson.
