It's about right... Many 2 seaters look like that...

The 5 series I looked at was £40k and in three years was expected to be around 16k and that's for a practical car.

Do you look at any cars other than just the e89?

Not really, I was just browsing What Car and came across their Car Depreciation Calculator tool. Thought I'd go for the most expensive Z4 as an example! I have obviously heard many people talk about how bad depreciation can be but have never really thought about it before. Seeing the numbers there just shocked me a bit! I'm sure it's the same for all new cars, just slightly different % losses I guess? Fair play to those who can afford to take that hit though. Owning a brand new car must be awesome but is unfortunately something I'll probably never be able to do :(

Why not ? my guestimate is 75% of new motors on the road are PCP cars so its more than affordable .
As proven by the 21yr old electrician at work currently running a brand new Fabia Vrs , £1200 deposit & £260/month , that's one weeks take home just funding the car , then his insurance at £120/month + fuel, tyres & tax  crazy days

Ive been put off new or nearly new after losing my shirt on a rover 820i fastback in early 90's £9k to £1500 in 2 & half years  utter shite as well , , hurt so much it made a lasting impression 8) since then ive enjoyed the motors i fancy & can afford but get in & out before the wallet get's seriously caned .
Best was aircooled 911 returning £1500 profit after 18 months incl running costs & a VW touareg i had for 2 years & sold for £50 less than i paid .
worst was a 2003 E240 losing me £5k in 3 years  last merc i've touched
As a rule i usually run a car for 8/12 months then try to get back what i paid ? had the Zc almost 10 months

Bloody ell! -good news for us that are waiting to buy a decent e89 cheap tho :) (sorry dont mean to cause offence)

You also have to factor in the fact that it starts at list price if you discount that price by 11k to start with its not so bad. :) :tumbleweed:

That's why I am very happy I bought a year old one! The depreciation on mine was worse however 57k-28k in a year! 29k in a year! Still I am happy!

Hold on, hold on!

There's an "Approved Used" '13 plate 20i on Autotrader at the moment for £31,500 with over 1100 miles on it. If I have a '62 plate 28i with 650 miles on it (roughly the same spec), does that mean I can potentially make circa £7k over what I bought it for, given the BMW contribution and the money off for haggling?

Should take a good while for depreciation to be noticeable if that's the case.

I compared the 35is with the Boxter S - it's the first year which is the real killer after that the curves are similar rates of decline.

Try to negotiate a massive contribution/discount from a Porsche dealer...not happening...then recalculate the real depreciation curve.

Z wins.

You would think..

Having had bids from pretty much every southern UK BMW dealer I can tell you your 28i will get a dealer bid around £25k and that's if its got pro nav and auto! Some would say, so sell it privately, again from experience, I can tell you people buying these newish cars want to get them from a dealer. Which makes no sense. In my case the card had warranty and service pack. Not one offer, even though up at £3k less than dealers...

I think you have to accept that the drop in value is the cost of owning the the car and either you are happy to pay it or you arent and decide accordingly

Buy one at 3yrs old = half price ownership :D

50% in 3yrs is about normal really, or 20% a year.

I wouldn't buy anything new if those depreciation figures make you say ouch, because unless you get something super special that defies the usual trends, all cars will be in the same kinda ball park on depreciation.

Unfortunately that's about right! I got just under £16,000 for my 2009 35i (with 31,000 miles) on trade-in for my Evoque! The dealer thought that was a good price!! (they sold it to a local BMW dealer). :?

A work mate has a 2 year old petrol 3 Series and he was looking at trading and he was told that the same year 3 Series as his in diesel format would fetch nearly £2K more come trade in!! :o
