Other marques you wouldn't own?

Just as thought from a comment in the RS Twins thread. What other marques would you never own? I've had half a dozen Fords now and would happily have more. The new Mondeo for example gets a fantastic reputation. By comparison the Insignia got Car of the Year but I wouldn't own a Vauxhall - just don't like them - I had an Astra for 3 months as a hire car and on the day it went back I still hadn't found a comfortable driving position. I'd make an exception for a VX220 though!
At the moment, some Chinese marques sound like death-traps although they're improving. Likewise Korean stuff, great value and definitely coming along but I'd still steer clear.
Finally French stuff for me, no way. Think they have some superb looking cars but I had a Pug that was a unreliable disaster. Once bitten twice shy.

Anyone got any rational or irrational reasons for just saying they'd never own an 'xxxxx'?

British - never again. Discovery I had the worst car ever.
French - sickly drive, too soft a suspension.
Japanese - plastic galore, no feeling.
Korean / Chinese - basically anything Asian - don't mention.
Italian - beautiful, but so bad.

Basically, only German for me.

I would not own the following :-

Renault, Peuguot, Citroen - excellent looking cars in the majority but that's about it. Terrible build quality IME. All pose with nothing to back it up.

Vauxhall - slipped way behind Ford as the leader of the mass produced "A to B" driver. I would have a Focus to and Astra, a Mondeo to a Insignia etc etc. Every aspect of the car comes off as second best to me.

Ssangyong - don't know much about them. Don't know if they still make cars. But what a horrible name to have to explain in the pub !!!!!!!

Absolutely agree. But I will buy Ferrari. :)

X2

only german for me, unless it was a lambo/ferrari then obviously italian, but thats a different ball game i can only dream about....

German only for me although too I did dabble in the Nordic metal for a while. Saab Volvo, etc. and that was solid stuff.

Ford - you'd have to pay me to keep one. Went though all the Cortina's, Orions, Escort and an Exploder. Only exception is my daughters KA that's just the cheapest runabout I could get.

Won't touch Italian either - even exotica. Too fragile

Jeeps I love too but hey what can go wrong a 4l staight 6, gearbox transfer case and 2 axles.

Was about to say I'm fairly open, but anyone that only makes FWD can bog off! Apart from Fiat, the 500 or Panda, although that would be a 4x4. So I guess pretty much German for me too then, unless Honda pull another NSX out of the bag!

Only one I would defintely rule out... Hummer. Seriously what is the point :? Oh and now Toyota, because of the Pious. Just nob off! Although, thanks for saving petrol for those of us that love driving real cars! But mostly, nob off you smug gits!

x2 the only 911 I ever liked the looks of was a yellowy cream coloured convertible with the top down, top up ....yech!

Alfa or Fiat! Not so much the cars but the dealerships! Used to own a small Fiat as a run-around! Dealership was next to useless! :?

Going against the grain here I can't rule out French cars the 2.0 RTi Laguna I had was one of the most comfortable mile munchers I have ever had, though the 406 Coupe was way to soft and never lived up to the styling, plus were thinking of getting the missus a Clio as a runabout.

But just can't bring myself to have a

Skoda,
Fiat/Alfa
Toyota (Prius is the biggest con job going)
Proton
Kia
Daewoo (chevrolet)
Vauxhall (had a Cavalier years ago as a hire car could never get comfortable, also a Vectra worst car I have ever driven convinced the power steering was filled with custard)
What is British these days? Just so I can rule them out, after all:-
Jaguar (Indian)
Land Rover (Indian)
Rolls Royce (German)
Bently (German)

Just don't know what I'd do if I had change the Z tomorrow.

I'm quite suprised by some of the replies in this thread. Perhaps I'm too young and not had enough experience of some marques in my 13 years of driving, or perhaps I'm just less bothered about a badge :D

I like a lot of French cars and would take another Clio 172 (best small hot hatch ever) if the reliability was better.
Skoda - they ARE VW's now, no reason not to buy one IMO.
VW/VAG - I'd happily go there.
Fiat - hmm, but I owned Punto's for 6 years with zero problems and part of me still wants a Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo!
Anything German - oh yes.

The brands that I doubt I'd own are the likes of Chevrolet in the UK (rebranded Daewoo), Proton, Kia, etc

TBH if a car had a good reputation for what I want it for, I wouldn't care less about the badge it wears.

Nothing French, hateful cars! My Dad's ended up with several Renaults, somehow... hated the lot.
Absolutely nothing Korean, or pretty much oriental in any way... with the exception of Nissan. Don't mind VW, but wouldn't have a Golf (know far too many people who've been threatened in their beds for the keys!) or a new Beetle (it's NOT a Beetle!). Ford I'd have no problem with, if times were hard and I needed a run-about, but would always be a car of necessity, I'd never choose one over anything else.

Until I can afford that Aston DB5/Ferrari 250 GT california/1960 Corvette Stingray/1966 Mustang 390 Fastback, I'll be sticking with BMW. Though I suppose I could be tempted away by a new Mustang.

a11y, you also have to understand that some of us don't get all those marques. WTH is a Clio? The only French cars we ever had were Renault (kinda liked the styling back in the '70s) and that bastardization that was Eagle (iirc, Renault + Chrysler). We also have no Skoda, Vauxhall, etc. Until recently, Ford didn't bring in the Euro Fords, but they've seen the error of their ways.

Major brands we get, off the top of my head:
Ford
GM
Chrysler
Fiat (now that they own Chrysler)
BMW
Mini Cooper
MB
VW
Audi
Porsche
Aston(rare)
Rolls
Bentley
Rover (Land and Range, no cars)
Ferrari
Lambo
Maserati
Volvo
Saab (well, it's now "dead")
Toyota
Nissan
Honda
Lexus
Accura
Infiniti
Hyundai
Kia

I've probably forgotten some......

smokin', I take your point - you're actually lucky in many ways as you've been spared some horrific cars that we get landed with. But I suppose the same could be said the other way around too

French manufacturers have a history of producing excellent small "hot hatches" and that's probably where my appreciation comes from: I turned 17 and started driving in the late 90's and these were the cars all young guys wanted at the time.

Basic formula for a hot hatch: take a shopping car, still a bloody big engine in it, give it some decent suspension and a set of alloys...

Would agree with Ally - I was 17 in '97 and a lot of people our age did want French hot hatches - Pugs, Citreon's along with stuff like XR2's etc etc. For me it was a (real) Mini I wanted. (Specifically an ERA Turbo for those in the Mini know). My experience and of too many people around me was that French cars seem to have a higher than most instances of breaking down and it's hard to shake an image like that once you've got it. But then you'd have said the complete opposite of Toyota until a month or two ago!
I said in the first post I'd never have a Vauxhall/GM. The American reponses made me think - I'd make an exception for some Aussie GM's. They're traffic cops might have a reputation for being a bit draconian but they know how to make some proper cars.
