Other BMW's to get?

I have not bought myself a new car in the last 13 years. My wife always picked out a new car for her needs, and they have always been Honda Accords. Great family cars, almost bullet proof, but not the most sporty....
My next car will be my daily driver.

In my heart, I still want to get a second Zed (coupe?) for myself, but since we (wife and I) already have one, I have been toying with the idea of a 335i Coupe. Not necessarily a brand new one. But maybe.

What is the major points, pro and con to I-drive. The 335xi has I-drive and the 335i does not. My thoughts on this is that i-drive adds some unnecessary weight.

Any other thoughts on this?

We don't get x-drive in the 3 series here, not so sure you need it, it must add weight, affect performance and fuel consumption too, but not so noticeably, not sure :idunno: The 335 was having problems with the fuel pumps (early ones anyway) so I'd check that it was all cleared up under warranty - have a look on E90post.com at some of the posts there.

What does the weather get like there, or where you go - I suppose you go further North with work a lot?

I'd wait until 5th November before you do anything as the new Z4 is meant to be announced then. Might be a few bargain Z4M coupes available for you to choose from :)

Currently up on E90post. The HPFP issue has been fixed.....

Active Steering?????

Not going to buy until the middle of next year. I have lots of time for research.... :D

Some info on the steering here, although I don't think we ever got to the bottom of it

As a daily driver what about a diesel, I thought the 335d was coming to you guys now?

If it is going to be just a daily driver, I would get the cheapest best mileage car I could find. Any BMW is too expensive to maintain and in my opinion to fragile to drive to work. :(

I drive my nearly 9 year YOUNG Z3 every day, just drove it cross country and back and it gets regular maintenance, which is when those indicator bars run out. I get the oil changed every 7500, with more synthetic. This is all ROUNTINE maintenance, what is extraordinary and expensive about that? Where is the fragility? :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

I have to agree. I also have to question concerns about i-drive and x-drive adding weight. We had a 2005 530xi which had both and was a pleasure as a daiy driver. Gas mileage was average and in the rain and snow, it was stable and secure. I'd be more concerned with weight for a racing car. As far as running costs on a used BMW 3-series, they have very high reliability ratings as shown here.

I have had a 3 Series Touring for a little over 8 years (it's just the 318i SE). It is my daily driver and hasn't had much wrong with it. I broke a rear spring (I know that is common - is that what was meant by fragility?) but in terms of reliability it has never failed me. I would buy another one when this one finally dies but it hs 80,000 miles on and still feels like new so I don't think I'll need to any time soon.

I guess I did a poor job of describing my use of the world fragile. I did not mean to imply that the Zed could not be driven hard everyday to work and survive. What I meant was that most of us really love our Zeds and spend many hours selecting the absolutely correct wax. Make sure no swirls show by using only the most expensive buffer. Put, like I do $8.00 per quart oil in the Zed. Put the best product we can to protect the soft top. Spend thousands for custom wheels and tires, etc. The list goes on and on. Go though the listings here to see the guys showing off their latest modes. I DO THE SAME SO I AM NOT SLAMMING ANYONE. In my opinion ShipKiller is like me and is a stickler for keeping any vehicle he has in top condition. :)

Now contrast that with what many daily drivers go through. Mud, snow, salt, spray each day. Paint dripping from freshly painted bridges and other structures. Tar from freshly repaired roads. Rocks flying from unprotected truck tires. Other drivers in the parking lot scratching, either intentionally or unintentionally, you Zed. Running over all kinds of junk in the road, let alone pot holes. I know of guys who have had other guys toss all kinds of junk at their expensive cars as they go down the road just because they are jealous. The list goes on and on. :x

I have a fit if there are water spots on my Zed and wash and polish it as soon as I can. The correct word may not be fragile, but I sure as hell am not going to drive a 40K plus vehicle daily to work on the roads today. I would get a 2K car and dive it as long as I could then junk it and get another one, knowing that my baby is safe in the garage. But that is just me. :D

I would keep mine in the garage if I had room... it's full of black bin liners :D

For me a car is for driving so you may as well have fun driving it, then wash it when you can hardly see it :D

My daily driver is the train :o

The 335i with diesel is coming so he would have to buy new. The X drive is all wheel drive and adds weight. Do you need that? If you do, heck, I'd go for an X3 or X5 rather than the car with the xdrive. The 335 gasoline engine scoots pretty good! I do NOT like the "hard top convertible" version as your trunk space goes to "0" with it down.

I really liked my 325Ci. Great gas mileage and seemed bullet proof. Daughter graduated from college was the only reason I was able to treat myself to a Z. My coupe IS my daily driver.

The 335i with a good set of winter tires is good enough for the "terrible" Virigina Beach winter. From what I understand, for MY09 the 335i also gets the latest i-drive. It's allegedly much better than the current generation. I have an i-drive on my 2007 X5 and I don't understand the fuss about it. It's working well enough for
me but then I am a computer geek so compared to a malfunctioning Windows environment a few quirks with i-drive is not the end of the world.

I prefer the 335i sedan myself.

Cheers.

Agreed. Mine gets used in all weathers, lives outside (the garage is for my motorbikes) and usually gets washed once every 2 weeks. Wouldn't know what a clay bar was if it hit me and I polish the car once a year if I get time. :P
I do have a "hack" car, a Diahatsu Terios that just gets used for travels into town or to the tip!

Note. My Z4 still looks like it came out of the showroom when I wash it and it only takes me 40 min!

Back to topic, I think the only other BMW I'd own at the moment is 335i Coupe. I wouldn't mind a drive in the new JCW MINI either. :driving:

I also think I am the only person who likes the X6 also! :P

Yesterday, I was on my way back from the Warwick, Rhode Island Hooters, (sorry no pics  ), driving down I-95, doing about 85MPH.

I came up on a E46 ///M3. He thought I wanted to race but I just really wanted to run fast. He pulled away from my like I was sitting still. God he was fast...

While I was up in that area, I went to the Inskp BMW dealer. Just wanted to look. They did not have a 335i Coupes on the lot. Sold out. But they did have seven ///M3's on the lot...

I bought the M3 as my Z4 replacement. I test drove the 135 (not the 335 but the experience should be better on the 1-series) and found it sterile by comparison to the Z4. It's fast not that involving, which is disappointing because I was looking forward to that test drive.

Get the M3, it's really quite a good car.
