Original wheels, or after market....??.

Hi there, I hope you are all enjoing he better weather here in the UK.
After my car (Z4 35i) has just failed it's mot for having multiple cracks in three of the alloy wheels,style 326, I've been looking at getting some aftermarket alloys. I have seen a couple of sets that I quite like, but nothing that really grabs my attention as much as the ones I have now.
Would I be better off getting the original wheels repaired and refurbished, and is this safe??
Also, I will be replacing the runflat tyres so what are the chances of them cracking again???

Personally i really like style 326 wheels, but with runflats on they WILL crack, as yours have done. Cracked wheels are basically worthless, so id get them repaired and keep using them rather than fork out for new ones. With non run flat tyres they should last a lot longer.
 
Where abouts are you? there’s a cracking set of Veemann’s on non-runflats in the classified that @smartbear is selling but they’re are collection only.

Personally I’d be replacing the O.E wheels and going a different route :thumbsup:
 
It is legal, so presumably deemed as safe, to weld cracked alloys. But do you want to drive around in the knowledge that you have cracked wheels? They are still cracked when welded, just welded over. They also have a habit of re-cracking at, or near, the repair as the wheel is weakened. I would not be comfortable driving around on repaired 19" alloys, but some are.

Style 437M from the F8x are good replacements as they look very similar and are forged. The widths are bigger but they do fit apparently. Quite expensive used, though, and megabucks new. Buying used wheels is a minefield IME, as many are as bad, if not worse than the ones being replaced.

Veemans do have a good reputation and are not stupid expensive. As said, there are a set on here for sale for reasonable money

They'll just buckle instead because they are softer.

Switching to cast wheels is just jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire.

If budget prevents getting forged wheels then it's best to stay with genuine wheels in a smaller size.
 
I recently replaced my 19" 326s (RFs) with an aftermarket set of 18" (NRFs) and the difference in the ride quality is amazing.

Was seriously thinking about selling as the ride was that bad on the 19".

After selling my 326's the change cost me about £400 which included a spanking new set of boots.
