Original antenna v stubby...opinions

I have a BMW stubby - reception is ok and good enough

I listen to the engine mostly or CDs so don't make any difference to me - I much prefer the look of the stubby

OEM stubby for me, reception as good as the original whip.
Went for stubby a) so the indoor cover fits easier and b) to deter passers by from 'having a grab at it', less vunerable to vandals.

I picked up my Z4 yesterday which had the stubby installed, but the seller also gave me the old whippy. I tried both on the way home and the reception in marginal areas is definitely better with the whippy. I dont know whether the stubby's a BMW one or not. I don't mind the look of the whippy, but the stubby is cuter and less prone to jerks pulling at it.

The Nottingham branch of the whippy owners club. We like to meet in car parks that have notoriously bad signal.

I went for a kind of half way solution, not being keen on the O/E aerial and likewise with the stubby. I retrieved this one from my Mazda before I sold it, radio reception is fine as far as I can tell - I'm pretty deaf though so rarely have the radio on when I'm in the car

@Grumpyowl, I was taking the micky but I do miss the 80s style wing electric aerials, they look cool! http://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/electric-car-aerial

Have to agree I think it could work on a Z. But I'm a bit old school

Stubby -v- Whippy depends on personal aesthetics and if ........

a/ you listen to the radio as opposed to the engine/exhaust [especially if you have a MM mod  ]
b/ you want FM or AM - as FM is dictated by the hidden aerial behind the rear bumper [ask MM :) ] so the aerial makes no difference

p.s. I swapped to a stubby, cost me a fortune as it snapped, so had to replace the base [right PITA that is] and now I can't get R5Live - anyone got a whippy they don't want?

can anybody link to a decent stubby then? i cant find mango stalk anywhere on ebay etc and when i do look on ebay they all look cheap so dont really want to buy a cheap crappy 1 if i can help it?
anybody purchased one online recently and have the link please?
thanks.

EDIT:

I had thought about trying to fit a shark fin??
hmm, good call.

But wouldn't we need two? One on each wing?

Silly me, of course not, just one in the middle of the boot! :o :driving:

I've heard the Mangowalk aerials are pretty good quality, and at about £10 isn't too bad, does the OEM BMW aerial perform that much better to justify it being more than double the price?
