Orange roof light...

Hi guys

Following my post from last week, I took my car in the garage to get my sound/amplifier looked at - and booked that in next week for more work
However, i've just driven it home to find out that now my roof isn't working. Pic of the yellow/orange roof warning comes on the dash
Was working fine this morning before he looked at the amp!

As the amplifier he was looking at is in the boot, and the roof folds back there, I assume he's either accidently disconnected it or knocked something. I've reset the parcel shelf on it several times in case its not detecting its down, but no joy

Roof doesn't attempt to move, and i get no lights on the roof open button. Just the orange roof pic on the dash

I'm assuming it's not detecting that the parcel shelf is down?
I saw another post about a microswitch in the boot that might be bent? But can't see where the switch I need to look at is..

Any ideas?

I'm just looking for help or ideas for things to check to save me having to take it into a garage, buy a code reader etc as its late an nowhere is open

Any help would be appreciated

Roof protector sensor is on the left where it pushes down and latches.
Sort of knob sticks up with round lump. On the roof protector should be metal plate.
The sensor detects that when in place.
Even a craft knife place there will act as a plate, see if yellow dash goes out.
All a bit hard to explain without pictures.

Thanks for this - I honestly appreciate anyone who assists with ideas like this

So just place some steel on top of the plastic protector that the parcel shelf clips into? (where the red arrow is?)

What about the one on the other side of the boot?

I wasn’t being disingenuous …these cars have over 30 ECUs and dozens of sensors..the roof ECU is pretty dumb..without a code reader you’ll be extremely lucky to troubleshoot most thins without a code reader..

What sort of code reader would you suggest?
Obviously the cheaper the better..

I mean, the roof was working fine until the guy in the audio shop did a diagnostic on the amp. As it’s all relatively in the same area of the boot, my mind is pointing me to him knocking or disconnecting something

It’s not like it’s even trying to open. It’s like it’s detecting that the parcel shelf is not in place so won’t attempt it.

I’ll try the suggestion with the metal plate when it’s light outside and go from there…

Only on the left side.
I had cause to remove the protector for a few days but still wanted to use the roof.
So placed a steel blade on part red circled.
From memory i think it stayed in place due magnetic in sensor, but would need to recheck.

Buy a good obd reader and read codes, you can't own car like these without one.

Thanks pal - I’ll try that in the morning. Fingers crossed it works as it literally worked yesterday before the audio guy messed with it!

I have an ODB reader and it only came up with the following - which doesn’t seem to be much help

So had look this morning.
I operated roof to get boot open then moved the protector up.
With engine running only warning was the a red roof closed symbol on dash, not yellow.
Might help.

Hmmm. I'll go and try and get it to work in a minute

Are you able to try something for me? Can you leave the parcel shelf up and then try and open the roof?
I'd like to know what warning you get on the dash if you try this...

I'm assuming it will be the yellow one i'm getting now...

Yep - sadly a proper code reader is what you need.

Your screengrab says that a DTC (diagnostic trouble code) is stopping the roof test - you really need to know what that DTC says.

Alternatively, if speed & free is the order of the day - just guess loads of stuff & see what happens.

You could have ordered a code reader from Amazon & had the answer by now :)

Yep. A code reader is needed.
I have standard OBD2 ones but that’s not cutting it.
Can you recommend one that I need?

Cheers

Update on this. Went out this morning and the roof opened first time with no issues. Can't really make sense of it as I tried 6 or 7 times last night

Question to anyone who can help:
Are the rain sensors on the car linked to the roof? I had washed the car a few hours earlier and thinking about it today, maybe thats what was preventing it from opening maybe?

The only other thing I can think of it that the cloth I used to polish the car was in the boot after I polished it. Maybe that hit the parcel shelf sensor and messed up the sensor maybe? (It was near where the photo with the red circle showed earlier in this thread)

Who knows...

But if anyone does know of a good code scanner, i'd appreciate the recommendation

I recently bought a Creator 410 reader from eBay for around £40. It is BMW specific and will read all later models and Mini (if that is of extra use).
Easy to use and fairly comprehensive. It will display live data aswell. The ONLY criticism I have is that it is hard to read the screen in bright light.

The Creator is a commonly recommended scanner on all BMW forums I frequent.

Definitely worth the £40.

Yes that's what I bought the Creator 410, it is very difficult to read with the roof open and not easy to see the selections when scrolling. I thought it was because I am colour blind but obviously not. It solved by air bag light problem though and got rid on the engine symbol when I left my oil filler cap off.

Creator 410 or 310+ are capable scanners for BMW cars, reads all the modules and is handy to carry in the boot for immediate use when you need it. Can be updated on the web and comes with the cable to do it. Current version is 12.04, so check what version comes with yours when it arrives and update it if needed, mine was shipped with version 11.09 so updated it but that was a couple of years ago.
