Opinions wanted and a question or two.

First of all I'll start with what people think about tinting the rear lights, I know some people think it is chavy but I do like it just wondering what peoples opinions on it are.

Which leads me on to a question is this legal? Am I right in saying its only illegal if you do not have a seperate reflector? As the Z4 does.

Secondly the ring lights that are yellow can these be changed to white by simply just changing the bulbs or is it in need of a full modification?

Again do people have tinted windows or is there really no point in the Z4? What are the limits on tints on the front windows is it a no go altogether? As I have seen some peoples cars with really dark front tints I thought this was Ilegal?

The only problem tinting side windows, is if you drive with the windows up if its a bit chilly, would look a bit naff.

Talking of tail lights, i did see one on ebay for spare/repair that had all silver, the red bits were missing.

Your windows must let at least 70% light through. Most windows standard are at the limit and tinted and adding further tints are illegal and you could not only find yourself in trouble with the law but invalidating your insurance and technically driving without insurance. Anything front of the 'B' pillar is a no no as a rule of thumb.

Regarding tinting your rear lights Legal Stuff

MOT rules and regulations state:

1.2: Headlights
A pair of headlights must: emit light of substantially the same colour and intensity. emit a steady colour of either white or yellow. be visible from a reasonable distance.

1.3: Brake lights
A brake light must emit a steady red light. At least 50% of the lamp must be visible from the rear Light must be visible from a reasonable distance

1.4: Reflectors
At least 50% of the reflecting surface must be visible from a reasonable distance.

1.5: Indicators
Every indicator must emit amber light. At least 50% of the lamp must be visible. Light must be visible from a reasonable diqstance.

Masks, or converter kits.
A headlamp or rear tail lamp altered in this way is not a reason for MOT rejection. So long as light outputs are not adversely reduced, it emits the appropriate correct colour and the mask is securely attached.

One might comment but others might not and a traffic officer or VOSA can stop you from driving your car if they deem them excessive. Unfortunately a few years ago someone with stupid tints caused a very serious accident with a motorcycle and a crackdown was launched. All because the person in the car never saw the motorcycle due to his vision being obscured.

If people wish to tint their windows then it's their choice and there is enough information out there to let them make up their minds but when someone asks re the legality of these things it would be wrong to claim they'd be alright when actually they may not. A lot of professional tinting companies will tell you the law prior to fitting and some if not all will make you sign a disclaimer advising you are aware of the law and they have advised you.

Some more information here. Not sure what your insurance company would make of the tints if involved in an accident and they were advised as a contributory factor of the accident and legal action was taken. I could see the insurance company maybe saying they were mislead by the level of tint. Without a certificate to prove the level how are they supposed to know. And as they are illegal over 30% inc the factory level they really should be checking this.

I had tints on my Mini in 2002, looked great but used to be a bit of a mare when I had to reverse park in low light.

I have NEVER seen a vehicle where I regarded strongly tinted windows as anything other than ridiculous.

I don't mind a subtle tint all round, complying with the regulations. That can look quite classy. Such tints are often done by the manufacturer and as such, invariably look right.

However, as soon as some windows are tinted more darkly than others (whether at manufacture or after-market), they look idiotic.

The message they convey is that someone is trying to make their car look like some kind of limo, or that they are pretending to be carrying a VIP in their Mondeo.

I know I'm a miserable old sod, but I tend to feel this way about almost all car accessories and mods. ( I forgave myself fitting stubby, but then I removed it as reception was garbage).

Thanks guys helped a whole load and got some useful links out of that Twin Turbo, thats the level or tint I would like on mine really nice example.

Another question just popped into my head is there anything out there for a 3.0 regarding big brake kits?

Again many thanks guys.
