Opinions needed... please be honest

Hi, i have been looking into changing my Z4 over the next few moths. I have been looking at a few different cars (boxster, z4 coupe, z4 roadster) but i have now decided on sticking with the Z4 roadster... (for now  )

Now i need to decide on which Z4 roadster... a 2005 3.0l or a 2007 2.0l (both of these tend to be the same price in Ireland). I have tried to compare both of them below (please do not suggest a 2.5... i either want the top engine or the most economic)

2005 3.0l PROS
- it's a 3.0l engine as opposed to a 2.0l engine (so much more power)
- will tend to have more extras than the 2.0l
- i won't start crying after 2 weeks that i have down graded to a 2.0l

2007 2.0l PROS
- it has a 2007 plate as opposed to a 2005 plate
- will have the facelift
- i am not getting much of a chance to use the power that the 3.0 has anymore due to the roads i drive on so would the 2.0 suffice
- i tend to do 280 miles a week and the 2.0l has better fuel consumption (MPG)
- a 2007 will have less mileage than a 2005
- motor tax on a 2.0l is €600 a year as opposed to €1300 a year on the 3.0l

I am looking forward to your opinions on this topic HOWEVER i am worried that the 2.0l members will just favour the 2007 2.0l and the 3.0l members will favour the 2005 3.0l

I am not trying to save money in anyway by choosing a 2007 2.0l so please keep this in mind, i am just looking to choose the most sensible car out of the two considering both are the same price, looking forward to your comments, thanks in advance...

cant really see the point in moving from a 2003 to a 2005 car unless the spec is much better.

why would want a four pot though

it's a 3.0l engine as opposed to a 2.0l engine (so much more power) says it all!
really tho y change at all? u have a great car ad neither replacement seems an improvement- yes ypounger in an 05 but reallly no dif

After spending a fair chunk of my time stuck on the M50/N7 in rush hour (even with the toll booths removed) and can concur and say a 3.0 is wasted!

That being said if you know you will not regret getting a 6 pot i would go for the sensible choice.

A few years back i had a 140 celica instead of the 190 and I loved getting higer mpg and cheaper insurance - however i often regretted not having the extra power available when i needed it... so if possible i would never make that same mistake again.

I'd stick with the 3.0. Although one thing I would like to know... why are you changing your current car for essentially the same car? I assume its not been a bad car or you wouldn't consider another! So why change to a car that will look the same, offer the same performance and for which you won't know the history? Why not bag the difference and do a few upgrades to yours? Get those facelift lights... M wheel... brake upgrade... facelift or M bumper?

Just seems an odd thing to do given the unknown history of the 2005 3.0, specifically has it had replacement roof motor and springs?

If you're not trying to save money go for the 3.0 or you'll regret the change. Well, I would.

Cool, thanks for all the replies so far... i would just like to move up a few years to be honest but most of you think that it is not worth the €4k to change from a 2003 to a 2005 but then saying that i would also be spending €4k to change from a 2003 to a 2007, thanks again for all the replies...

Nah to be honest it would't do it for me, either an economic 2.0l or a powerful 3.0l - don't want to be in between

Honestly I would go with neither. if you want to move up a few years then make it count i.e. not just two year. personally If I wanted to get a newer zed I would wait until I could afford an ///M or at least a 3.0si. IMO You'll regret getting the 2.0, because you know what a 3.0 zed can do!

Unless there are serious problems developing with your 2003 that you know of and thus feel the need to change it out, or the spec is missing something key then I think and upgrade to a 2005 is just wasted money.

I'd stick with what you've got and continue to build the cash pile then somewhere own the road make a bigger move up.

Thanks again for the replies, no the only reason I am thinking of a change is to move up a few years. There is also 61k miles on my clock. You have all seemed to change my mind now... lol

time to sleep on it (again)

thanks again for your comments

If you buy the 2.0 L after two weeks you will be crying soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much that you may fall into depresion.....

(HAVING A SOOOOOOOOOOOO big engine hood , enough for a helicopter to land on it, and having 4 cylinder engine it....its a crime...

Regards

Well I understand how you feel I have a 2.5l 2005 and I love the car, but recently I wished sometimes I had more power.......more more more......we always want more.......bigger, bigger, faster, faster......there is more to it than that. Example I love the colour of my car, toledo blue with beige leather, power roof, power seats, climate control, diming mirrors, would I give up all these extras that I like for the 3.0si 255hp.......but in a ugly colour with no options...........absolutely............not.............I love the way my car looks, which is important, the colour combo is killer and not seen often.....so If i had the 3.0si in my car then great,,,but to change my car, lose the amount of depreciation.....the taxe i paid on it...for an upgrade....not to mention the hassle of selling my car and buying who knows what, my car is mint and maintained by me with the best oil money can buy...amsoil, 5W30. Then pay tax on the new (used) car......by the time this is all said and done I'm looking at 15k if not more....is it worth it......no way, I'd be driving and saying....ok it has more power it feels good, but in the real world we don't drive our cars on race tracks and we don't put the pedal to the medal to go to 60mph. My car can do it in maybe 6.? and the 3.0 in 5.? does it really matter? they sound about the same and the handling is the same (except for accelaration), if i had to buy my car again I would buy and wait to find the 3.0si in the colour I liked with options that I want.......

So in your case I say not worth it at all.......

I read reviews about how this model is better than the last and blah blah blah, it is all relative, you think Ferrari owners don't want more power, of course they do.....911 owners with 345 hp want 400hp and Z4 M owner with 333 want more power too.....

Most people in the world not driving better cars would love to have a Z4 in their drive.

Save your money keep your car, be resonable (I'm talking to me as well), money does not grow on trees. If you are really not happy with your car then sell it, but you will not be happy at all from a 2003 to a 2005 or even a 2007 because it is essentially the same car. The new Z4 is a different car is you like the styling. I think the hard top is too much because you buy a convertible to drive as a convertible, way too much hardware and weight for the rainy day, all high end cars, Ferrari, Porsche etc still have a soft top because of that reason, and you loose all the trunks space when the top is open......

So hope this helps you.

Dustin

P.S. for the fun of it as I have done, go to different car dealers with your car and say "hey I would like to trade my car, what can I try". Then go and try different cars, Boxster, new Z4, etc.....then get back in your car and see the difference it won't be as huge as you think.....maybe a bit better, faster......but worth 20k or more for the upgrade, I don't really think so IMO.Unless your made of money, then.........think twice, often the best thing we had was right in front of us or under us.....ok I won't go there....different topic entirely......

Thanks Dustin... well put... i am in Australia at the moment on a 2 week holiday and to be honest i can't wait to get home for a spin in my car... although the sound of V8's humming past you every 2 seconds will suffice for now... not to mention the F1 cars that i can hear from my apartment... bring on the weekend :)

Keep the 03, 61k is nothing for the 3.0i motor, and you 'know' your own car. The 3.0i is unstressed and is hardly doing a lot of work pulling a little Z4 chassis around! :D

Everyone says this sort of thing but I don't get it. It's not as if we live in a metropolis that's nose to tail 100% of the time. Sure, during a commute you can't drive it balls to the wall but it's totally worth having for those times when you are not stationery...I live in Central London and still get plenty of opportunities to 'drive' it when you head out of the city or the road is clear...If you do the odd track day too you can truly enjoy it.

Can't see the logic in trading a 3.0 for a 2.0 of the exact same car unless it's to save money on a 25k a year fuel bill (and even then, once the cost to change is accounted for, it may be futile). 3.0 E85 to 2.0 new shape perhaps because then at least you get a newer design...

I have a 2.0l, and there's never a day that I don't regret having the 3.0l. The 2.0l handles great but the power in my opinion is puny. Stick with what you have.
