Open Door Policy

I've had this happen a couple of times now, during "spirited driving" on some undulating country roads, all below the posted speed limit and complying will all laws, regulations and ordinances mind you, I've had the driver's door pop open to the safety catch. This usually happens after cresting a bit of a rise. Now I know convertibles are not as rigid as a fixed roof car, but I've never had this happen before on any convertible car before (including MGs :-o ). Is this just an adjustment thing or a worn part or may it be indicating some type of frame damage unrevealed/undetected by the previous owner and/or dealer?

I've had this occur with my passenger door. I've never been able to pinpoint the exact driving situation I'm in - I've always thought it was due to rough roads. Hopefully it doesn't increase in frequency because dealing with BMW dealerships can be like talking to a wall (see rear spring threads!).

Adama222 - sorry to hijack this thread but so quick to condemn BMW probably based on very limited experience. Have seen several Zed 4 drivers do very silly things when driving but I don't condemn every Zed 4 driver. My local dealer replaced the broken spring out of warrantee with no problems, collects my car from my house for service and returns it the same day etc etc. Give credit where it's due and do not be too quick to condemn. If you dont like BMW dealers then get another car - a Ford perhaps....! :poke:

And as for the thread have never experienced this problem.

I had this happen once on my 2003 3.0i. I was driving around the speed limit on the Interstate with cruise on. The passenger door just came open for no apparent reason. I pulled over and closed the door and it never happened again... :o

I had a 5-series a while back that used to randomly lock itself while you were driving along (not programmed to do so).....turned out to be a damp connector.

I had this happen multiple times... Drivers side for us Americans. Over the period of about 6 months I notice the door got more and more difficult to open from the outside until the point where the cable connected to the handle and the locking mechanism came off of the "cable carrier". I was unable to open my door from the outside. Went to BMW $700 they wanted to charge me.

My original thread about this... http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=11851&p=180938

I ended paying $500 after buying the parts from another dealer that was willing to negotiate.
