Oops I bought a Boxster!

OK - I am a BMW fan - I have had 10!

I wanted a great toy. And drove my mates 986. Was impressed.

Bought one.. a 2000 2.7 - Now hate the steering and find it intolerable round town - too stiff and wheel too thin...At speed you can launch into corners like a racing driver.... in town its like turning a 20 tonne truck. AN OLD ONE.

Should I stay or should I go?

Can you argue the Z4 for me? Does it have lovely soft variable BMW steering?

Well the 2,7 boxsters are'nt exactly quick ( 0-60 in 7 seconds :? ) & also look dated in comparison to the E85 Z4 so yeah i could argue the case for a switch to BMW 8)
Go for the 3.0Si on non RF tyres & you should be singing

No variable steering on an E85/6 but unless you get an ///M it will be light being electric.

The Z4 also knows which direction it's going unlike the Porcshe which looks the same from either end.

I looked at getting a boxster and drove a 2.7 and 3.2 face lift but ended up with a 3.0si 265 bhp so glad i did love the Z a real around car

Si-forks is tapatalking

I went from a Boxster to a Z4M, how long have you had the Boxster for? If it's a short time I'd give it a while to get used to the change, I'd imagine the clutch feels quite stiff and the brakes under servoed too

this was mine:

really enjoyable once you get used to it.

The mid engined feel is great and handling was excellent too.

Give it some time, i am sure it will grow on you!

I could swear my steering gets heavier the faster I go, as round town parking it's as light as a feather.

As for 0-60, can't believe the porker's supposedly only 7 seconds. Not into traffic light sprints, it's the mid range where with that kinda badge & the abundance of quick hot hatches out to embarrass you, even my 6 second E85 needs all its muscle in the tustle for who's got the biggest todger.

One has to compare like with like.

An old 986 - and they are feeling really old is better than a 2.0L Z4 but is MILES AWAY from the 3.0i. The 3.0i is such a great car.

The newer 987 2.7 is directly comparable to the 3.0i/3.0si, I tend to love the Z4 more as its more fun though the Boxster is higher quality.

The 3.4 987 is the best of the lot with great handling and the chassis is more suited to the 3.4 than the 2.7.

A 3.4 would be better compared/raced against the Z4M though once again, being 2 very different cars, the 3.4 is mega great for handling whilst the Z4M is much more fun.

I'd buy the Z4M but the 987 is the better option in every department.

3.0i E85 Z4s are a little quicker on paper compared to the 986/7 Boxsters with the 2.7 engine but there's less than half a second in it with the Zed coming in just under 6 secs and the Porsche at just over.

The 3.2 engined 986 Boxsters share the same performance as a 3.0i E85 and the 987 Boxster S should be about half a second quicker than an E85 3.0i in a 0-60 drag.

Boxster 986/7s do look more dated than E85 Zeds and have far more potential to generate stupid repair bills. If you are going to run the gauntlet of second hand non warranted Porsche ownership then you might as well do it with a 911.

Zed every time hands down for me! :driving: But what do you expect to hear on the Z4 forum!

Don't listen to any of this. It's like trying to pick a girlfriend based on their income, height, IQ, credit score, etc.

Test drive them both first. You may fall in love with one of them. If not, then come back and decide based on the numbers.

Not every department (performance, noise, looks) but I know what you mean. It's an easier car for an average Joe to get and drive quick.

We have both... wife has a 3.2s Boxster, I have 3.0si Z4 Coupe.

I would struggle to drive the Boxster daily as I do the zed, but it is a fun, loud weekend / summer car

Yes.

The engine is pretty good on the 3.4 and the PDK gearbox is even better.

Still would take the BMW myself but as you said its more of a drivers car (the Z4M).

Both nice cars in there own different ways. I test drove an older boxster when I was shopping for my z4, for my budget it had to be the z4 though, seemed much more useable. I think the Porsche marque is more appealing but for the money it has to be the z4, unless you have a 10k plus to play with!

Boxsters and Caymans are the best all rounders Porsche make but they just dont do it for me they dont have the presence of the 911.. and the M coupe.... well there is nothing like it on the road.
