useful thanks. The 72 hour "check" code seems especially badly thought out....If the 72 hour check isn't suitable for the situation then you only need an internet connection to access your info - just have to remember your NI number.
I never really understood why we ever had the paper part, glad to see the back of it.
Don't travel abroad to rent without getting the unique code sorted. I can guarantee some hire car companies will refuse you and bet some foreign police will be all over it as a revenue earner.
Off to Spain in a couple of weeks and I just know they will be on the south coast as usual checking I can reach my high vis jackets, DL to hand, insurance etc. or issue a ticket... This will be a nice extra revenue earner..

There does IMHO need to be improved publicity though as if you still hold a paper licence issued before 1988 as I do then it doesn't become obsolete.
