One touch roof kits

So we are thinking of getting one of these when our car arrives in September as it is the only thing that niggles us. If we lifted the pressure off the button in the slightest then it stopped and started flashing red. Its amazing how long the seconds take when you have to hold it on a single button. Any tips or advice on whether they are any good?
 
Wouldn't it be an excuse for them to get out of a warranty claim if anything were to go wrong with the roof?

I agree it would be handy, whilst out on a test drive we stopped to put the roof down, the guy that came with me had never been in a convertible before, so we pushed the button and got the flashing red light...we thought we had broken it lol.
Is it right that you have to keep you finger on it until the side windows come up after the roof has gone down? I thought that they would stay down with the roof! it's bit daft really because I soon as the windows closed I pushed the button on the door for the side windows to go down.
 
You don't need to hold button down till Windows at back up. The green led goes off on the button when the roof movement is finished and you can then let go of the button :)

Don't take this the wrong way, newbies are always welcome, but this subject has been done to death on this forum. Do a search for SmartTop & you'll find all the pros & cons (pros easily out way the cons)

What the other threads may not tell you is that the Smart Top can be programmed to do various options with the roof, windows and mirrors.
For example you mentioned "holding the button for 20 secs"
With the module fitted it's a single tap
But a double tap will leave all the windows down ;)
It's not the most intuitive device to set up but well worth fitting as an accessory. Shame BMW couldn't build if in as standard.
If you do opt for one just remember to disable it before going back to the dealer. If they aren't expecting continuous operation of the mechanism from a single button push, there is a potential for entrapment in the mechanism [emoji15]

Also one of the guys forgot to disable/remove it and they tried to do a system update which failed. Bmw then removed the smarttop in order to carry out the update. The hassle of that puts me off installing mines. Still not done it.
 
I don't think it would be too complicated to make a electronic circuit to do this function.
Open button latches a flip flop relay to open, which trips out when led lights up and visa versa with the close button.
With a bit more thought and design pressing the open/close could start/stop hood at points in between.

I've never noticed if the leds light up if I use the key fob to open?

I guess its a safety issue that is why you have to hold it continually. Passed all the info to hubby as he will be the one to fit it. Also a bit worried about the warranty/lease aspects that we hadn't thought of. Will keep you posted on what we decide, thank you again for all the info :D
