Once Illegal but now Legal Ram Air Scoops

Yep, the odd thing is that I assumed he had done his homework on the patents etc, to be PMing me but clearly he hadn't.

RPI won't even have a patent on the intake scoops, so not worth worrying about.
You simply wouldn't believe how much it costs and how long it takes to get a patent filed! And how much it costs each year to keep that patent from expiring.

Trust me when I say this, there really isn't a lot of money in automotive parts after bills, overheads and staff are paid.

All Vanne did is point out that this scoop had been done before, which is true, right? I doubt he had anything to gain from pointing it out. Maybe he was mistaken about potential consequences for selling a nearly identical product, but I doubt there was malicious intent. Who cares?

seems a bit exaggerated.
RPI themselves also make downpipes and exhausts that resemble bmw products (they have to otherwise they wont fit) and sell them as 'performance products'. The world is full of aftermarket car parts that are a direct swap and identical. That's not illegal unless its patented.

anyway its not my or anyones business. If there should be a problem, it's between rpi and Dan (and maybe the moderators). If anyone has a problem with that, they should contact a moderator, not the member imho.

No sensitivity on my part, it just gets my goat when people stick their noses in to somebody else's business for no reason at all and for their own gratification.

But if you think that what Vanne has done is acceptable then that's your opinion just the same as my opinion.

I dare say that your opinion on his actions won't be echoed by others on here though.
I could be wrong though...........but I doubt it.

Unless or until someone who has a patent applied or pending, the seller of an alternative or other interested party contacts the site owner or a mod, forget about it.
A bit of research shows me from an old thread why vanne is ticked off, but that's his problem and he's still entitled to opinions and comments.

I can assure you if something upsets a manufactur they will be all over the site like a rash with their managers and/or lawyers. Sat nav owners of the maps would be a good example.

I'm not condoning nor agreeing, just observing.

In terms of patents there's a lot of drivel in this thread mixed with good information. I worked for a software company that made its money leveraging its patents from the US across europe. It cost them £100 of thousands, but they made more from it than the products they sold. You can patent almost anything if you're smart from design colour, purpose, etc. to,protect the originators IP and hopefully market and revenue line.
If you breach a patent it'll hurt you if you operate in a civilised and fair legal country. If you want to build a BMW X5 in the Far East - different story.

You're correct in that I don't care to purchase a scoop, but not because I have anything against the seller or what he's doing. I haven't looked into it to see if it's a direct copy, nor do I care to do so. My point is that this is overblown. If a developer shut down at the first hint of an obstacle, he wasn't committed in the first place. The developer did right by asking the opinion of the forum when patent laws came into question, but a witch hunt against the guy that brought it up is a bit absurd.

From an outsider, it looks like everyone got upset at the thought of their toy getting taken away. We're all passionate, but let's leave the emotion out of it. It's difficult to judge tone through text, and secondhand at that. One person's "watch out" might mean "hey buddy, heads up... this may be a problem", while another person may take "watch out" as a threat.

Although I don't know Vanne personally, I do know him online through another forum. He's got a great reputation as one of the nicest guys around. He's a solid contributing member, in that he's been upfront and open on his carbon airbox install, race seats, roll cage, etc. More than likely this was a misunderstanding, but even the best of us have our bad days.

As far as sticking his nose in where it doesn't belong, no, this is a public forum where everyone is entitled to an opinion. He may think this is wrong, while a other members may think this is right. That's the internet.

I hope for everyone's sake he continues to be an active member. If he leaves, you're going to miss out on good information, which goes beyond all the threads about backbox deletes, and tuners promising 40 bhp from a reflash on a NA car lol.

Garbage, even if they did start a legal action it would be against you personally and would usually be preceded by a Cease and Desist. The forum is in no danger except perhaps from Muppet&Co Commercial Lawyers Ltd

Only so far that if illegal content was to exist on the site (for example copied discs), and forum admins allowed the content to exist, they can be held responsible.

Hi guys, just saw this thread. Good responses, no doubt all valid.

Sorry if i upset anyone. I won't apologise to Dan, as I don't think its correct what he's doing, but thats only my opinion. We have some great guys in this small space that is the Z4 community. Lets continue to make it as good as we can. I was only worried they would shut this site down because of infringement, and i really like coming here and reading the threads. Anyways, I was probably wrong in assuming RPi would have an issue with it. No Harm meant.
