On the hunt for a Z4MR

Hi guys,

Hope you're all doing well! After writing of my 3.0 e85 last year which then appeared on top gear live(towing fiestas :(), and subsequently on eBay for spares, I'm about to make the plunge on a z4mr!

Can't wait to have a car that I enjoy again! I opted for a cheap 02 325i as a replacement, which I've been thoroughly disappointed with (totally missed the z4 experience) and I'll hopefully be trading it in next weekend for one of these:

I'm swaying for the interlagos blue one.

Can't wait!

Opinions welcome!

The blue one is very well spec'd, but IMO is overpriced... The black one I have seen before - nice, but the piano dash is not my thing. Better price, but I'd be looking for a grand off it.

Welcome back Mr Spearman :D

Hey bing! I see you're on the forum just as much as you used to be!

The blue one has an absolutely pristine history! Ris, brake fluid, insp 1 & 2 are all spot on and been completed by BMW coopers in Chelmsford.

Admittedly, a bit more than the rest of the 8 z4mr's that I've found for sale but is exactly what I'm after. The dealer selling has given me an extra 1k on the the usual price of the 325 I have, so it brings it inline with other cars. It's also only had 1 owner.

Glad to be (nearly) back!

Indeed - can't shut me up :D

From what you've said, sounds like a good deal to be had then - out of the two I would go with the blue. Good luck

Hey there spearman, welcome back mate :)

Love the Montego blue which has a great spec but is a bit over priced, but it looks so good though.

The black one is good too, still a stunner but is more realistically priced.

Hope you can get the prices down and get yourself a good deal

Definitely favouring the blue one! Hopefully I can negotiate further on the price.

Out of curiosity, do you guys know what the button is to the left hand side of the gear stick (Same place as the sport button but on the other side)?

It isn't a button - looks like one, but just lights up when the passenger airbag is disabled.

It's not a button, just the airbag on/off indicator for the passenger side.

Welcome back nearly as well. :D

That's cleared up what the button is! Cheers guys.

Going to view the blue one at the weekend :)

Has anyone asked a dealer for the service history before? Is it as simple as asking for a service copy? I want to go over it with a fine tooth comb so hopefully they can print it out for me.

I asked them to print off the service history from the key reader and send it over. If its a non BMW dealer get them to take pics of the service book and send it over. You can always take a detour into a dealership during a test drive and get it validated from the key...

I called the servicing dealer of mine Nd confirmed the book with him and any warranty work - very helpfull

Personally I'm not a champagne interior guy, I placed a deposit on the black one you're considering just as it came into their stock then pulled out.

Here's why;

I negotiated down to £16300 including a years tax, then placed a deposit to hold until I got up there.

The history has not been on schedule - but if you ask them to, they will confirm in writing that it will never affect you extending the warranty. VERY IMPORTANT. So problem solved there...

However... when I saw the car, all the alloys were not only curbed but also flaking. On the drivers door under the window it had a small bubble (believed to be rust) which had just been painted over. The front bumper had above normal scuffs and the windscreen was chipped in a number of places. It goes on... turns out the car had had a strut brace fitted and removed as the drill holes had been used, maybe not a problem for some - but I think it is a sign of a car driven in "anger". One of the bars under the bonnet was also the wrong way up for no apparent reason (?) - perhaps it had cracked under the strain of heavy driving and had been replaced like that...

But the finishing blow that put me off the car completely - and in fact made me angry with the sales executive having asked him specifically about this - was the interior. The driver seat had been so excessively worn that the stitching had become stringy and the bolster itself was floppy (probably because the previous owner was seriously fat), the piano lacquer trim was scratched, the passenger window switch on the driver's door had actually been ripped off all together (god knows how...) and finally... the interior smelt like it had been owned by a smoker.

Other than all that... it's a lovely example :D GL

Wow! That sounds dreadful! You've narrowed my search further and saved me a 200 mile round trip! Nice one!

I'm going to have another chat with the dealer selling the blue z4mr and run over the interior in detail. It's a 360mile round trip. Hopefully they'll be honest and upfront. The asking price demands perfection IMO.

Get them to take pictures of everything you want clarified. Sytners had zero problem doing this for me. Nothing was too much trouble
