On the hunt for a Z4MR

Good afternoon,

I hope you are all well and safe in the current climate.

I've been without a car for some time and I am going to treat myself for an early 30th birthday present and have finally decided on a Z4MR.

I have had a variety of MK1 Eunos', an EP3 Type R and a facelift S2000 to give you a background of some of the more interesting cars I've owned in the past.

I was also considering another S2000, E46 M3 or a 987.2 Boxster S, but the Z4MR seems the most appealing to me.

The car will purely be used as a weekend toy with the view of doing some track days. I doubt I'll even do 4k p.a. I am going to set a budget of £15k max, however, would ideally like to spend a bit less with £1-2k left aside for any repairs that might need doing. I'd probably get the rod bearings changed as a precautionary measure and will continue reading up on common issues with these cars.

Ideally looking to purchase in July/August, if anyone has anything that they would be looking to part with at that time, please drop me a PM.

Many thanks,

Sharif

Welcome to the forum. :)

Best to post up a thread in the wanted section once you are able to.

Oh and no you can't have mine it's a keeper. :D

Welcome to the forum.

Not sure if you’ve seen this one, available now - maybe you could come to an arrangement. Looks fantastic in red with aero skirts too 8)

Welcome and good luck with your search - great time to buy.

In addition to the stunning red Saj posted, this is owned by a forum legend and is pretty impressive too.

Thank you all for the welcomes!

I have actually seen both those examples already. It seems there are some lovely examples for sale at the moment, but unfortunately I cannot pull the trigger until July/August. I was originally aiming to get something for October/November but have brought this forward slightly!

The expensive repair items are

Rod bearings and have the oil pump and oil relief valve looked at the same time as the oil pump unit needs to come off to do the bearings If serious track use consider an adjustable external oil relief valve

Check the play in the left hand side diff out put flange BMW designed this on a Friday afternoon.

Have the Vanos unit serviced

A must do it the roof motor/pump moved to the boot

Then standard stuff like change all fluids

If you trawl through the what have you done to your car thread you will see most of what I have done this winter just gone

And given the pain and suffering it cost me to do 95% of the work myself my Z4MR Is not for sale

Number 5 is selling the ex Darren sloane car, very well cared for

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Other things you need to check are that the running in service got done at around 1,000 miles, and whether the car is due an Inspection 1 or 2 service as they involve checking the valve clearances and new shims if required so cost is a fair bit more than just an oil service.

I hope you manage to find a good one when the time comes.

Thank you for the feedback on items to look out for. That is very helpful.

I've worked for a BMW main dealer previously (albeit in the Motorrad department) and know some ex BMW car technicians who would be able to help with the more labour intensive repairs.

It's a shame I can't pull the trigger just yet as I've seen quite a few nice examples! Roll on the next few months!

Often owners wont have thought that far ahead or be posting a car for sale that wont go ‘up’ until July or August. As you’ve already seen a couple and knows what you’d like then it seems pointless to post as potentially any cars for sale at the moment, you aren’t interested in. Unless, they are still for sale in two to three months time...

Good luck with the search, when the time comes.

Hi all,

I thought I'd update this, I ended up purchasing a Z4MC off a forum member.

Here are some pictures:

It's a 2006 finished in black sapphire with an imola red interior, carbon leather dash, nav, dsp, pdc, aero skirts and an RPI exhaust.

I'm not 100% sure if I'll keep the exhaust on. I'll be getting it booked in to get the rod bearings changed as a precautionary measure very soon.

Looking forward to giving it a good detail and driving it some more!
