I'm due for an inspection in 550 miles but I don't know if it's inspection 1 or 2. I purchased my '06 3.0si used and don't have the previous maintenance records.

I pushed and held the S/R button on the dash while turning the key to ignition. This showed the on board computer and red as follows:

51A (might be S1A)
Inspection
550 miles
rESEt

What does 51A or S1A mean? I'm guessing it means inspection 1 but i want to consult someone who's had experience.
 
Searched the web and plenty of reference to 51a but no direct meaning - certainly associated with the service interval and appears on BMW bikes, Minis as well as BMW cars. In relation to the inspection question and as shrutch mentions - this will relate approximately to the distance the vehicle has covered and you don't mention this. A quick call to your local dealer with the vin. and reg. number will reveal the service history (as should your service booklet) and what the next service interval is.
 
79,000 miles with 550 to go for inspection. Very high mileage in a short 4 years of the car so I suspect many highway miles from previous owner.

I don't have the server booklet because I bought the car from an independent dealer who got it from an auction. No owners manual even. :)

Well, I guess I'll try callin the dealer

With a 3 year warranty most of the service will I suspect have been done at a main dealers so BMW should be able to give you the service history.
