On a different way to 10k

OK - just thought I'd plug myself a little here. To assist my 'fight against the flab', and getting older, I decided to take on a challenge of a) losing a significant amount of weight and b) to achieve a run for the first time.

I wasn't the most active of people, like my weekends out, but decided I needed to make a change and registered for the Great Yorkshire run in September in Sheffield. Its a 10k run - and I've never ran in my life. I've not played football properly for about 15 years - so this is gonna be gruelling. To make me do it, I decided to do it for charity and chose 2:

The British Heart foundation - my mum has heart disease so this is for her.
Sheffield Childrens hospital - a dear friend lost their unborn child to a brittle bone disease last year and I asked him who he wanted me to do it for in her honour. And him and his mrs chose this. This is a major incentive.

Anyway, I'm now appraoching 3 months in my training programme, visit the gym 3-4 times a week, and have even been out running. My goal is to raise £500 per charity and hopefully I'll get there although I've not publicised it much yet. In the 3 months I've been at this, I've lost over a stone and a half (still want to lose another 2), and its been difficult but also enjoyable.

So, a bit of a plug here and hope this is OK, but if anyone would like to 'sponsor' by a justgiving donation, I'd be eternally grateful. I hope this is OK putting it in here - it was just the 'on the way to 10k' thread title that got me thinking! Anyway, my links are:

British Heart Foundation
Sheffield Children's hospital

I appreciate this won't apply to everyone on here but I'm just keen to get visibility. I have got a blog running on my progress although I've not updated it much recently - and need to make it a little more interesting to be honest!

As I say, hope this is OK.

Paul

Don't you runners be making the traffic go slow in Sheffield :poke: :P

Good luck to you and well done for the weight loss so far

Will it be safe to do this if Lucy is on the road? :P

Well the one's that take up all the road do when they cause you to do 5mph because you can't overtake them on the less than wide streets of Sheffield and Rotherham  I usually beep at them when i eventually get past

crikey 5mph is slow :o Im only ever doing that speed for about 1sec after starting from a red light. not many cars can beat a good cyclist off in a standing start

Cheers for the comments - and cheers gannet & zed_steve - tops!

Lucy - the route is from the town hall, down to shalesmoor, all along penistone, turn round at the wednesday ground and all the way back. The worst but is the last .5km is ALL up hill (stupid hilly Sheffield). Thats gonna do me big time! Saying that, if I get there I'll be happy (3 months ago I could run down stairs never mind 10km!)

Based on previous comments of yours (in the midlands meet thread), I don't think you need to worry - its 9-12 on a Sunday morning.....
