Ominous and Persistant Rattle

Hello Folks

Was hoping someone else out there might have been having a similar issue to me and was able to get it resolved or the perhaps someone might have an idea as to whats causing my problems.

I have had a '05 2.2L for just over a year now and a few months after getting it the near side rear has developed a rattle/clattering. The sound itself is difficult to describe but could best be explained as sounding like metal on metal but unfortunately cannot be much more accurate than that.

It sounds like the noise is coming from the nearside rear wheel arch but also like its coming from under the car, in the vicinity of the axle, lower suspension arm or anti-roll bar.

I've spent quite some time pulling my hair out over this and have come to no useful conclusions. So far we have found that my rear handbrake cables were rubbing on the anti-roll bar drop links so the drop links have been changed and the cable tied up out of the way to prevent further rubbing. The heat shields/dust shields for the brake discs are firmly in place. Nothing seems to be loose within the suspension assembly.

The noise started as a light rattling sound but progressed over the course of a few months to where it is now. It cannot be missed.

Primarily the noise occurs when going over any even slightly uneven surface to the extent that on just about anything except a freshly paved road it is there. It does seem to quiet down when doing over about 40mph though so it is usually sounding off when around town.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Would definitely check all your disc splash guards as they can be very deceptive as to where the rattle is coming from I was convinced mine was rear ps and actually it was front ps just give them a wiggle to be sure and also check your exhaust is hanging correctly and has all the hangers and fixings other than that maybe get someone outside the car as you drive past to see if they can pinpoint it good luck

sounds like the usual suspect of broken spring, they generally snap near the base so its not ways immediately obvious at first look

Backplate on the rear brakes. They rust happily and come free from the fixings.
