Omg, running motor but no fluid movement

Hi all,
My roof has stopped working for no reason. The motor has been replaced and been relocated to the boot/ trunk. The roof unlocks when opening but does not move after it unlocks, the motor keeps spinning but the hydraulic fluid does not move at all. I check the brass bypass and it's not stuck. I can manually move the roof. Any ideas? Could it be a broken pump? :headbang: The motor spins both directions with no issues...

If you can manually move the roof is it with low resistance? Sounds as though the bypass could be stuck open :?

The brass button is spring loaded and I can press on it and it comes right up. Doesn't that mean it's working. If I am wrong, should i squirt wd-40 on it?

I don’t know anything about the workings of the pump but if you can manually move the roof then is the bypass valve stuck in the open position or perhaps a seal has has failed.

Has the motor been moved & then stopped working immediately? Has it got enough fluid to pump at its new less upright position in the boot?
Rob

If your certain the little bypass button is fully raised then sounds like the pump is at fault internally since the motor is running ok in both directions. Just check out the pipe runs to the roof rams are intact and not leaking. I take it that you have the correct level of oil in the reservoir?

The last time I checked, there was fluid oozing out of 13 on the pump. I cleaned it up and now it's not moving the fluid at all. The three washers were properly installed as well. :(

No leaks on the roof rams. I bought this 05 110k 3.0i for $7k and started to hate this car... :fuelfire: On top of that Carly is showing 52 errors with misfiring cylinders WTF

Don't loose heart with the car, sounds like its not been loved maintenance wise or the last owner was clueless. First thing is list the code details you are getting so we can see whats going on in detail. Next Fit a set of new plugs so you start with a level playing field. Misfires may be bad spark plug coils before replacing that needs more diagnosing by swopping them around to see if codes follow a bad coil. It wont do any harm if you also do an oil and filter change then you will know whats in there. As to the roof problem could be the pump part of the motor unit has failed internally, may be a replacement will be needed. There are guys dotted around the Country who fix these and relocate them for decent money. Nearest one to me is Number5 who is on this Forum based in Bristol area. Where are you, you may be near one of the others who can sort this.

I had a similar problem when I moved mine. In the boot it is at more of an angle and the fluid wasn't covering one of the ports.
Lift it out into the boot/trunk in an upright position. Fill the reservoir as far as you can. Forget the marker on the side as that is related to it's usual installed position.
Hopefully when you put it back into the recess in the corner it will then work properly.
May take a couple of operations to bleed the air out.
Hope that sorts it for you.

Have you lost the pin between the motor and the pump head when splitting the two ? It should sit in the white plastic ‘daisy wheel’ and engage the motor to the pump

Tested it upright as well :(

It's there along with the spring that slides into it :(

The pin and the spring is there :(

Maybe an air lock.
Pull the hoop out, raise the roof manually, push the hoop back in and gently push the roof down. This should move the fluid in the system and move any airlock back towards the reservoir

Then try the switch again ensuring the hoop is in and brass valve fully out.

Also try unhooking the nipple at the pump lever so you now there’s no tension on the Bowden cable

Hoop meaning the Red release?
