Old Z4 vs New Z4

I bought the car because I like the shape/ look whereas I didn't like the old shape - each to his own.
I still don't understand the 'ditch the runflats' though.(apart from the cost) It doesn't tramline, lurch or do anything I wouldn't expect from any car I've had, infact pushing it hard through my local twisties its feels alot more confidence inducing than doing the same in my T350 which is much lighter and more powerful. Has anybody had theirs on a dyno or done some 0-60 times?

Mikedav - I think 13.9cm is a pretty big increase. I noted in your post you were mixing and matchimg between mm and cm, something that's never done. It just confuses. (I'm ignoring the fact that the post appears editted from cm to mm.), but don't intend to argue the point. We both know what the sizes are.

Really not important anyway!The point was just that they are broadly similar; I agree the new car is more SLK than Boxster (refinement / cruising ability vs out and out sports car), but dimensionally it's roughly the same. I actually really like the new car, it's lost some of the urgency and drama but it's gained in other areas. I've driven an sDrive 35 and a 23 and the latter really surprised me, was actually quite quick! It was also much smoother and more refined over bumps than the old car, and the interior is a clear step up. But spec for spec, so is the pricing so it should be. I'd definitely consider it in M form if they ever get around to it...

couldnt have said it better myself ! the new one just isnt bold enough in terms of design for me, looks too soft and rounded.
I can only compare my new Zed to my old Z3 (as to the tires ) and the Z3 had big rims and very low profile tires (not RFT's, conti's and PS2's I think) and it tramlined all over the place on shi**y roads. My new Zed (19") I would say is marginally better even with the RFT's.

I'm purely looking at stability of tracking down the road mainly. I think at the same time a chassis can be TOO competent though, so I'd not like to go too far.
I drove a car like my old 306 HDi diesel Peugeot the other day (tuned to about 160bhp and 1100kg heavy), and it simply demolished the kinds of speeds I can make in my Z4 down country roads... but that was 90% of the reason I sold it, too competent at going quickly with little effort.

I can go as quick down one of my fav B roads in the new Z4 as I could in my old JCW MINI. Couldn't do that in the old Z4. :wink: It just never felt inspiring in the corners!
Don't forget I have the adaptive suspension on mine. :wink:
One of the reasons I am now thinking of not getting the 19" wheels as most of the roads I drive on are not smooth A roads and dual tracks and I don't want to spoil the handling on bumpy, bendy B roads! I'll have to see if I can test drive a 35i with 19" on before I decide I guess.
The sort of roads I drive have led me to forget cleaning the Z4 till around April, as I clean it, go on one journey and it's filthy again!!

My take on it? for what its worth...
I don't really altogether like the styling of the new one. And I think it is very colour sensitive, the ones in white are however stunning if they have red leather.
I do however think it is a grower. Much like the 5-series.

2 weeks ago, I took my 05 3.0 to dealer for heater core exchange under warranty, and gave me a loaner car, 3.5 sdriver with manual tranny.
when I first got the car, I was surprised what they gave me, $65,000 loaner car, I LOL'ed and took off before they change their mind
anyways, after driving for about 3 days, I started to miss my old z4
new one is just too heavy....about 500 lbs heavier than older one
yeah, the twin turbo with MORE power was pulling the car after it spools, but cornering and lauching is just.....disappointing
I get off work at 3am and there are no cars on the street at that time where I live, so I do some fun driving going home, and I'm sure we know what people do to loaner/rental cars
I go canyon driving occasionally, sometime tracks, and took this new sDrive for the test and wow~ I almost lost to miata....which I normally don't consider as opponent
well~ I guess I have to go put my headers and exhaust back to my car and wait about couple more months until new owners of z4 get used to the car and find them on the street/canyon and see what happens....Mmmm most likely eat my dust ^^
